View Full Version : SNES issue -- PSU or fuse?

Yesterday, our SNES stopped working and when we try to turn it on, nothing happens. It was plugged in a multioutlet that also had NES and Genesis model 1 v2 plugged into it, and both consoles still work just fine.
Before opening up the SNES to check the fuse, we did a multimeter test on the power supply and got the reading seen in the picture. Can we conclude that it is indeed the fuse that's the cause of the problem?

Is that really 16.5 volts!? SNES is only rated for 8.5...
Could be over-powering it blew the fuse.

Well, that's with an actual original SNES power supply...

Official or not if any power supply advertised for SNES is outputting double its rating, something has gone horribly horribly wrong.
That just shouldn't happen.

I get 13.47V from my PSU.

The output on the power brick is within spec. I would expect to see anywhere from 12V-18V on that unregulated power supply while not under load.
Edit/ Just checked my brick.....14.58V unloaded

Oh. Shows how little I care about technical details.

It's definitely the fuse in that case since your PSU is good. The fuse is rated for 125V and 1.5 amps; I would suggest maybe soldering in a fuse holder so you can use more common (and more easily replaceable) glass fuses.

That is a great idea...
