Okay, so I picked up an untested Turbografx-16 from a guy on Craigslist for 5 bucks. I'm using alternative modes of powering the machine, and I'm going to pick up Keith Courage or some other cheap game just to test if it even works. I would really like to know if the controller port is functioning, however, and I don't really want to pay $20 for a controller on eBay if I don't even know if the system works. I know cheap NES knockoff controllers are sold like everywhere, but do cheap Turbografx controllers exist?... Anywhere? :| And help would be very appreciated.

I doubt it, system just wasn't successful enough to get much third party support (outside Japan anyway, no idea what they might've had there).
One warning, make sure if you do get one it's the right one, TG-16 and Turboduo (with the CD player built in) don't have the same controller port. IIRC duo uses the same port as PC Engine and TG-16 is the odd man out. There are adapters, but better just to get the right thing to start with.

Thanks for the warning. :) Yeah, I noticed a lot of them being sold on eBay.

i looked a few weeks back and was resolved to just buy them off ebay. You can get some pretty fresh ones for 20 or less if you are lucky. the one I got was like 12.00 and it honestly looks unused but I got lucky.
the only thing is, that if you pay $20 bucks and it works, you've still paid WAY less for a working TG16 that you can now play than you normally would. If it doesn't work, you'll be able to sell it for parts to someone for more than you paid for it so it can be seen as a win win either way.
