Well, so far I've been playing a lot of Resident Evil and Silent Hill on the PS1, but I've also played Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street on the NES to kick off October and the Halloween season. Have you guys played any spooky games to ring in the month of macabre?

What kind of recommendations do you have for creepy retro games that would be fun to play this month? When I'm done with Resident Evil and Resident Evil 2 I plan on playing Sewer Shark for the 3DO as well as Alone in the Dark for the 3DO as well. I do plan on Playing Halloween on the 2600 on Halloween itself, it's becoming something of a tradition for me since I got the game back in 2007 and I'm a man of many traditions.

How about you guys?

Most often if i replay a RE during october it's often RE remake,RE2 or RE4.If it's castlevania,CV1,Dracula-X Rondo of Blood,Castlevaina Bloodlines or Super Castlevania IV.

Well, some should be obvious:
Castlevania
Splatterhouse
Ghouls 'n Ghosts 'n Goblins (what would this series be entitled?)
Demon's Crest(if not all the Gargoyle's Quest games)

If you do M.A.M.E., or ever actually find the arcade cabinet, Night Slashers. Pretty much Castlevania as a gory beat 'em up.

Last year, I played a bunch of the Castlevania games. The year before that, I played Resident Evil 4. This year I may play Resident Evil 5.

Capcom Generation 2 on the Saturn (JPN) - Makaimura (Ghosts 'n Goblins), Daimakaimura (Ghouls 'n Ghosts), and Cho Makaimura (Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts) in one game. These titles were ported over to the PS2 for Capcom Classics Collection however the Ghouls 'n Ghosts emulation was all screwed up as the game was overly dark and felt delayed. The trade off is the Capcom Generation 2 port of Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts feels a TINY bit off but it's still the best compilation of the games.

I also always really enjoyed A Nightmare on Elm Street for the NES and speaking of the NES, while Friday the 13th can be tedious as all get out, it's still not a terrible game by any means. Monster Party is another NES game, an EXTREMELY entertaining and bizarre one, that would be a great Halloween title.

Nightmare in the Dark (Neo-Geo)
Shadowgate (NES)

Both fit the theme for sure! :)

Any of the Fatal Frame series. Seriously terrifying games with very interesting narratives.

Going old-school, I honestly used to be pretty scared when I'd play Friday the 13th or Nightmare on Elm St for the NES (despite them being 'bad', they still have some real charm for me).

Frankenstein: The Monster Returns, a very castlevania-esque game. Difficult, though not impossible, to beat, but has a very good atmosphere.

System Shock 2 on PC (now available on Steam),

D - the HVGN sold me on that one.
Enemy Zero - (Same. HVGN)

For campy fun, if you can use a light gun, Vampire Night for PS2 is pretty fun. :)

Hmm... how about turning it around to where you're the scary thing? Hell there's a new topic right there, "Video games where the player character is the horror."

Decap Attack[Genesis] (A mummy with an extending face from it's stomach, that throws it's skull when it finds it)
Avenging Spirit[Arcade, Game boy] (A ghost that possesses it's enemies, to even be able to play the game)
Shadow Force[Arcade] (Ninja that possess the bodies of their enemies. Hey, having your body taken over would be freaky no matter who it is)
Majou Ou [Super Famicom/fan translated as "King of Demons"] (kind of like Castlevania, but the main character wields a gun, and eventually transforms into demonic forms)
Altered Beast [Arcade, Genesis] (therianthropy)
Metamorphic Force [Arcade] (more therianthropy)
Chakan: The forever Man [Genesis] (An immortal skeletal looking guy in Solomon Kane's clothes, who beat death in a duel)
Various Godzilla games (should be obvious enough)
Various Rampage games (as obvious as Godzilla)

I'm sure there are plenty of others.

Actually the Capcom Classics Collection is mostly based off the Capcom Generation PS1 versions, so though Ghouls might have backgrounds too dark, the PS1 Cap Gen 2 Daimakaimura also suffers the same issue. The PS1/PS2 versions though suffer from less loading than the Saturn Cap Gen 2 version of Daimakaimura. Keep in mind, both PS1 and Saturn versions are not emulations, but ports with various little bugs between them, neither is perfect.

Chiller for the NES has always been one of my favorite Halloween games. A little hard to find but it's a really fun light gun game. Eternal Darkness for the Gamecube is a very atmospheric survival horror title that literally messes with your perceptions as you play it. Haunting Starring Polterguy for the Genesis is a funny/scary hybrid that's also a blast to play this time of year. But if you're looking for straight-up frights then I'd recommend any of the Fatal Frame series (PS2 & Xbox), the original Silent Hill on PS1, the first F.E.A.R. game (nearly dropped my 360 controller several times while playing through this one), Doom 3 (Xbox), Dead Space (360 & PS3) and Alien Trilogy/Resurrection (PS1).

Haunted Mansion for Gamecube is awesome.

It is based on the ride not the movie.

I've been playing a lot of Alone in the Dark on the 3DO as well as Resident Evil 2 on the PSone and have been having a blast playing both. I think when I'm done with Resident Evil 2 I'll move along to Silent Hill, another great horror game on the PSone console!

Oh how I love the month of October!

Can't believe nobody's mentioned Uninvited (NES) yet! Game STILL spooks me, and I'm almost 30 years old... heh.
Also a +1 for Haunting on Genesis, and Dracula for Intellivision (how can you resist it?).

I tried to beat Castlevania: Bloodlines last year, think I will again this year. It's one of my only Genesis titles still unconquered. I was also playing the Pumpkin Hill stage in Sonic Adventure 2 earlier today before I even looked at this thread, that's a fun little Hallow's Eve themed romp for any Sonic fans here.

YES! This is an excellent game, and the score for it is phenomenal too!

I also flipped through that big list that was posted and they have a pretty good selection, but are missing Kuon for the PS2 which is one of my favorites. Also, right now I'm playing Cursed Mountain for the Wii which is nice and creepy, and another rather unknown one for the Wii is Fragile Dreams.

Fragile Dreams isn't totally a horror game, but the mood it sets and the spookiness that pervades the game is very amazing. Definitely worth the try, and the game mechanics are very well done except for one small area.
