I would like to make a 2 player arcade set-up for 355 challenge (I already own the dragon cast cable) since it would be dirt cheap to make and its also my favorite racing game of all time. Unfortunately, no wheel on the dreamcast is good by today's standards. my question is can a simple modern wheel with only gas, brake and steering with paddles be modded for dreamcast? Something like the thrustmaster ferrari f430 would be awesome since its a ferrari wheel and is a 270 degree wheel just like the ones on dreamcast (at least my MC2). Just bought a racing seat and im already having a blast with my cheap MC2!!

If it has LAN play, I'd say try out the PS2 version. It will be easier to find a good wheel if the game is compatible.

I'm pretty sure the PS2 version predates the network adapter, so if it has link play, it would have to be firewire. It does have Logitech USB wheel support, though (sadly, no clutch + direct gears, paddles only).

For the Dreamcast version, get an Interact Concept 4 wheel. It's quite solid, and even makes Daytona USA, with its notoriously horrible control, play extremely well.

If I remember correctly, the only game that uses firewire is Gran turismo 3 and was called "i link" I believe, and I bought a 70$ firewire cable back in the day!! the ps2 version is not as good as DC so that's out of the question. I had a concept 4 wheel before and sold it because I prefered the mc2, never found the ferrari dreamcast wheel (only in europe?). I just bought a thrusmaster ferrari GT experience PC wheel, maybe I will gut it with DC controller or MC2 wheel if someone can help me tell how to connect the wires. If it works, Im gonna try a f438 wheel next!

Thanks for the clarification on the PS2 version. My severely underplayed copy is in storage and the information online is both sparse and vague. I also completely forgot that the PS2 didn't originally have networking capabilities despite having gotten the Network Adapter and a hard drive just last year. It is still so sad that the DC was wiped out so quickly by the PS2. That DVD player out of the box thing was just a stronger selling point than online console gaming at the turn of the millennium.

I really loved the DC modem and fondly remember playing Daytona USA 2001 online despite it's flaws. That game was such a missed opportunity, but I'd still love to try it with a good wheel. I hate that the HD remake of Daytona USA on the 360 is not on disc so much. It is absolutely incredible, but we are all only renting it until they pull the 360 XBLA service sometime down the line. Terrible.

Taking another a slight detour, I have never managed to find and play a fully working F355 cab. I've only seen them out of order or gimped in some way. The idea of having the clutch option is just fantastic. I can't imagine how great that machine is. I've never managed to find a Ridge Racer machine with the clutch that worked properly either. I keep getting foiled. Having to use a clutch in an arcade racer is so hardcore. Even if I spent the whole time crashing, it would be so much fun to try.

Also Time Crisis 2 and 3. No idea if there were any others.
