For the PS3 release, I remember seeing news stories talking to people who had been waiting in line for a few weeks and by the time the system came out, would have been waiting for one side or the other of a month.

I also remember the PS2 being quite similar to the PS3 release, with people waiting at places, such as, the Sony Metreons for quite an extended period of time.

I did a quick check and I see a few people who started waiting for the PS4 a few days ago, but it seem like it is nothing like before. I'm sure it will pick up now that we are under a week until the launch, but it doesn't seem like the same excitement is there as it was before for previous releases.

Do others see it like this or have I not been paying close enough attention?

I haven't been really paying close attention to it myself, but a couple Google searches turn up pretty much your findings. Maybe people aren't as excited as last gen? One things I've noticed over on NeoGaf is people don't seem worried about not getting either next gen console. I've assumed that was due to some statement (or perhaps another assumption) that there is an N64esc surplus of system available.

it's a different era now. that was 7 years ago. Too many consoles were available online for preorder, that most everybody who was really interested already grabbed a pre-order. I'm sure the night before people will be camping at Target's and Sears and K-Mart and Wal-Mart, etc, etc. Another thing to consider is the fact that supply will likely be greater than the demand, because the supply will be at unheard of levels. Sony could sell well over 2 million PS4's this November/December in the USA. There is a "slight" chance they could even pass 2.5 million, which is pretty damn good for a 2 month period of time.

The system is made with off the shelf type parts, allowing Sony to manufacture a metric shit ton of systems:

OMG they finally put a handle on the box! Yes it's a stupid thing to comment on but during the entire last generation I was working for gamestop. This would have made life SO much easier.

The launch PS3 had a similar handle on the box. As time went on, the handle went away.

I don't think the 360 ever had a handle, or the wii, stupid cheap manufacturers lol. It wasn't as big a deal with a wii cause it's light and fits into a bag. But with the 360/Playstation it was annoying.

Just like WCP said, we are living in the age of online preorders. You can't use the length of the lines outside stores to gauge excitement levels.

Hell you can't even use first day sales numbers to gauge excitement because a lot of people buy up launch consoles (or at least pre-order, pick-up, and return lol) so they can try and flip em for huge money on ebay. Now if the XB1 is selling for 2000 bucks after the 1st day that'll show you a pretty big excitement level.

For anyone that is picking up a PS4 this week. Target has all games(including PS4) at B2G1 starting today 11/10.

I'm picking AC4, BF4, and Killzone with the deal.

If you already pre-ordered 2 titles through Amazon check your email. They just sent a code for a free game to match the Target deal. I was able to get the $75 Skylander set for my kids for free and can now check one Christmas present off the list.

I am getting excited. I sat out the last generation completely since the kids were too young and I didn't have the time. They are now old enough and I am jumping on board. Can't wait for Friday.
