I have 2 model 2 playstations, and some games I've played on both make both machines run loudly.
These are all early titles and have a blue tint on their bottom side, but not as thick as the old black PS1 titles. ( 2 EA titles, and a 3DO ).
Most of my titles look like normal DVD's but these don't.
I don't suspect they're bootlegs, I was curious if I should simply deal with the noise, discontinue playing them, or if anyone else has had the same situation?

I always thought the blue discs were a sort of proprietary format for the PS2 although the PS2 was also able to use DVDs as well and the only difference with the blue ones were that they can't hold as much information.

They're not bootlegs though. I have a few myself that I purchased new at retail stores.

Those are games that are on CD instead of DVD.

Yes, and I think they're more susceptible to freezing from scratches.

Yes, the blue tinted PS2 games are in fact cds and not dvds. The only one I have like that is Ridge Racer V. I actually liked the blue color to it ( as well as the black color to the PSOne games) and was kind of sad to see it wasn't carried over to the dvds they had :(

I remember them as I had a pair, Gradius 3/4 was one and RR5 was the other. An oddity of them as I recall is that when your PS2 decides to finally start to up and fail the blue CDs tend to be the first to go followed by I think movies. It has been a long stretch since I had a PS2, ditched it when it stopped reading blue discs. It was the only console I ever owned that started to take a dump.

I suppose it depends on one's perception of color really.

I always thought they were blue, I've got a fair number of games that are the blue CDROM games. Ico, Taito Legends, Contra: SS and Jade Cocoon 2 to name a few. Never had any issues with scratches or otherwise playing them.

Maximo was another one. Loved the game, hated the loud noise that came along with it. And I remember these games as more blue than purple...

Here's a troll remark for you: "All PS2 blue cd rom discs are classic gaming because they came out when Xbox and Gamecube were still out, and most even while Dreamcast was still out" enjoy!

Nothing unusual about that, the blue ones rotate much faster (24x CD speed) and as such wobble more, the most common failure mode for the lasers are dirty lenses inside the laser causing focus lock failure, DVD rom is the second fastest, the last to fail is the audio CD, the slowest.

Not the ones I've seen. They're quite clearly blue, not even close to purple (or even indigo which it would reach before purple).

Some PSX "black" discs may appear purple if you hold them up to a light and look through them, though.

Same. Harvest Moon: Save the Homeland was another. That loud buzzing noise started to worry me after a bit, so I never played either game again.

Did you mean to post that here or in the topic about the board designations?

It's just a funny comeback from off that other topic. Meant to be posted here since we're talking about the blue PS2 discs specifically.

Except for Raiden III which was a 2007 release...

When my fat PS2's stop reading blue discs, that's when I knew it was time to take it apart to clean and adjust the laser. I remember seeing people (mostly mom's) bringing in PS2's to the game stores because they would no longer read disc's and get quotes for expensive "refurbishing" charges. I felt real bad for them, because many obviously couldn't afford to pay that much for the repair and I knew how easy it was to fix.

I associated blue discs with mostly budget games for a long time, but according to this list...

I see some surprises like Half-Life, Ico and even some Maddens.

Most blue PS2 games are also from 2000-2001. They stopped making them with the blue tint after a while, but it still looks super badass. Madden 2001 has a blue tint, so does Gradius III/IV (which I think someone already mentioned)

EDIT: Oops, maybe that theory was wrong. I heard that from a guy at a retro store a long time ago.

Nippon Ichi Software did that with a lot of their early ps2 games. Guilty Gear X is also blue/purple.
