I'm only about 4-5 hours in but I'm having a blast so far. Excellent game that any Zelda fan should pick up for sure.

It's a return to the series roots, unlike the other DS games. I played through Phantom Hourglass and it felt like more of a chore than a fun game. So far in this new 3DS title, I'm having tons of fun and always looking forward to the next time I can pick it up.

Who else is playing it?

I'm 15 hours into the game (having rescued 4 sages in the second part of the game) and it is a solid title, which succeeds in being a retelling of sorts of Link to the Past and a new game at the same time -- it reuses very familiar elements of LTTP, including boss fights, but throws in very clever puzzles, especially in some dungeons.

The only annoying point in the game (and most people will agree) is the need for Nintendo to push for a break when you try to save after playing for a while. Wish that it could be turned off, say within parental controls or something like that.

So far I had no intention to buy this game. I just don't like the style and design, visually I mean. Atmosphere is important for me in a game. I wish they would have used 2D graphics as in the Super Nintendo version...

On the other hand, I hear a lot of good things about the game. Should price ever come down I might buy it just for the sake of having played it.

Still pictures don't do it justice. When it's running it looks great. You won't mind the 2.5-d polygons. They look great in action. Using the analogue thumb stick is awesome too. It controls really well.

If you like alttp you'll like this. It's awesome. It's so damn good it makes me want to check out the phantom hourglass and spirit tracks, which I passed on.

The title screen music is the same as the snes game. It gets me soooo pumped, it's awesome.

Nintendos having a great year imo. Screw the haters. New smbu and Pikmin 3 are fantastic, and this new Zelda game is the icing on the cake. Here's hoping for a new ip or even a new metroid in 2014.

The first time I saw the commercial for this game I thought it was a Marine Corp recruitment ad...

Don't. Well at least not Phantom Hourglass. It was so bad I never tried Spirit Tracks. I can't believe I beat it, but it did feel like more of a chore than fun. You have to revisit the same dungeon several times in the game, doing the same puzzles and getting slightly farther each time. It really ruins the experience and each time I got back to that dungeon, I'd put it on the shelf for a few days because I didn't want to play it again.

Really bad game, worst Zelda I've ever played.

Wow, thanks for the warning. If I can get it for $5 I'll try it. Otherwise I'll hold off.

I second that on Phantom, avoid it, hell avoid both. Not only do you have that heavily back pedaling design problem in that title, but it's forced touch control setup doesn't work as well by any stretch compared to a d-pad and buttons. It wouldn't take much googling to find a lot of bitching about Link doing a bunch of unwanted rolling instead of moving due to the sketchy stylus setup and lots of related unnecessary deaths. The touch controls are a moderate failure mixed with the rest it's not worth anything in the least bit. Those DS Zelda's almost made me quit buying the franchise on the whole, Skyward Sword was decent but only bought it on a whim (big sale) or I'd have probably not touched the franchise until WWHD popped up it was that bad.

Better yet just get an R4i to sample those games and tons of others for free. Then you can find out about a bunch of missed gems to put on your want list and also see how bad any of the other bad DS games are so you can remove them from your want list before buying any.

No really, Phantom Hourglass is easily the worst "real" Zelda game and the fact that it directly followed one of the best is a travesty.

Taste is subjective.

True, but if the gameplay is as good as you (and many others) say, then I will need to buy the game eventually and just hope I can get used to the graphics style I don't like. Thanks for sharing your thoughts above btw.

I really am the only person alive who enjoyed Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. :/
Haven't played A Link Between Worlds yet, but I've seen plenty of the gameplay over a friends shoulder. Looks interesting, but something I'd be willing to wait for a price drop on.

True, but my point is it looks bleh for a 3DS game.
Semi-chibi style is just...uh...yeah.

The game is great, I just beat it a few hours ago. It captures all of what made the old Zelda games good and then mixes it up a bit. Unlike most Zelda games with the item rental system there is almost no linearity to the game letting you beat the dungeons in just about any order you want to. I highly recommend this game to people who like Zelda games. Also as far as Phantom Hourglass goes, I don't think that is a bad game, but it is one of the lesser Zelda games. I also think Spirit Tracks is better than Phantom Hourglass.

I hear what you're saying. I prefer the twilight princess/more realistic art style for Zelda games myself. And I agree that still pics of this game look wierd. But when you see it running at 60 FPS and start to appreciate the details they put in it (sword swings look really cool, sort of strider-esque) it becomes a lot more palatable.
