They're 3DS only, although several are based on earlier console conversions that M2 was responsible for. Arcade Super Hang-On for example is also on all three last gen consoles and I'm sure that 3D Super Hang-On used that as a starting point, Fantasy Zone II and Galaxy Force II are based on PS2 ports that M2 did a decade or so ago, etc.
And all these Genesis games have been made available digitally on the PS3 and 360, some also by M2 before they shifted focus to the 3DS, and earlier games like Gunstar Heroes by the Digital Eclipse studio (The one behind Sega Genesis Collection and Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection).
Of course those are straight up emulations, where as M2's Genesis efforts on the 3DS are a bit more ambitious, although only just (No where close to the TLC that the arcade games have seen with 16:9 support, new content, Outrun having its frame rate doubled, etc).
Ecco didn't even get the option to play the CD soundtrack, something that the wizards at M2 probably could've gotten going in an hour by muting the standard soundtrack and playing a compressed audio file in the background in its place. :(

3D Fantasy Zone II is awesome.
3D Fantasy Zone II is awesome.
I'll second this, it's fantastic. I never did play the redone PS2 version, only the SMS original, and didn't really know what to expect. I've got about 10 hours in on the first one which, is something that I surely did not expect to do but there is just so much to do that I easily lost track of time. From my initial impressions I can see this one sucking up even more of my time than the first. The graphics are amazing and the loop mode appears to be much more interesting than Upa-Upa mode on the first.
Speaking of the first, how many loops does that thing have? I'm up to the third now and it's handing my ass to me even on easy. Also, I read the 2 exclusive SMS bosses are included on it, when or how do you get to them?

Here's an interview about these new Genesis conversions.
http://automaton.am/articles/news-bits/m2-int1/
Perhaps the most interesting bit from it, is the statement that the Genesis based releases were more difficult to do than the arcade releases. So much for thinking that they were little more than filler to pad the lineup, due to their relative ease compared to something like Outrun.

So this really is the end of the 3D Classics line? Fucking stupid, just put the damn things on a single cart and be done with it. Slowly trickling these titles out month by month just pisses me off. No wonder Sega is in trouble. They release shit like Thor, Captain America, and a constant stream of crappy Sonic games, but leave this to rot in Japan.

Up until the the 3DS version released in Japan last year (which NA and Europe get tomorrow) there had never been an exact port of Thunder Blade for home platforms. The best one that existed was made the obscure Japanese computer, the Sharp X68000.

Thunder Blade for X68000 came out in 1990, it was easily the best home version made, but not a 1:1 match for the arcade.
Although the X68000 was considerably more powerful than the Genesis (and Amiga 500) and pretty close to Capcom's CPS1 board, it was still roughly about 50%
as powerful as the X-BOARD that ran the arcade version. Graphics were about half that of the coin-op.
Not as many sprites (X68K: 128 max vs X-BOARD: 256 max), 2 backgrounds vs 4 and the scaling, while really nice, was not true hardware scaling.

That said, and as you can probably tell, the X68000 version was far better than Super Thunder Blade on Genesis / Mega Drive (next post, only 3 videos per post) a game that wasn't actually even directly based on the original arcade version.

Thunderblade is fucking aces on the 3DS. It even has CPP/c-stick support for throttle.

The only bad part of this whole deal, is that there's now nothing to look forward to. :(
3D Genesis conversions don't do a thing for me...

Oh I know it won't happen, but if they could 3D classics up the SVP chipped Virtua Racing I'd be all over that.

Naoki Horii/M2: "If we sell a crap ton of copies, then I’ll go and make Power Drift by myself." (all laugh)
There's a glimmer of hope for more arcade conversions. It was just a joke but alot of people will take his word on that. I wouldn't hold my breath.

If this happens, we will be there, eShop cards in hand.
I'd love to see Daytona USA :guitar:, but that might be too much for the 3DS...

Turbo Outrun would be the one I'd most love to see.
With any luck, this one makes the cut if they commission another run of arcade ports for this line. Its similarities with Outrun definitely won't be damaging to its chances and should make it to a certain degree, an easy conversion compared to what they're typically used to.
It's the same hardware and I've read that it apparently utilizes a derivative of the original's engine. So their previous work with Outrun should give them a leg up on this one if it were to be green-lit for conversion.
