View Full Version : Why aren't there super deluxe versions of handhelds ?

Wouldn't it be cool if Nintendo or Sony made a "super deluxe" version of their handheld ? I'm talking about a larger screen (at least 7 inches), better built in stereo speakers, better buttons and d-pads and thumbsticks, etc, etc.

Imagine a 3DS XL, just quite a bit larger. Or a supersized Vita.

Now, obviously, this would just be a niche device, and it wouldn't be designed for the masses, but if there is somebody out there that wants to spend $300 on the ultimate 3DS, why can't he buy one ? Right now, we're stuck with the 3DS XL, which is an amazing system, no doubt, but what if the screen was another 33 percent bigger ?

The Vita is nice as well, but again, imagine a Vita with a screen that is 33 percent bigger, and thumbsticks that are 50 percent bigger than the current ones.

Sounds like you're basically describing the Wii-U

Wii U's gamepad might be similar, but even if you just play on that, you're still dependent on having the Wii U nearby and plugged into the wall.

Anyway, I think the main issue (other than cost) with such supersized systems would be the limited resolution of most handhelds. Blow them up too big and the image is going to start suffering at some point.

Considering how popular tablets have become, I've thought the same thing, for the Vita anyway. 3DS might be tricky since it has two screens and a lower resolution. Right now the closest thing we have is JXD's S7300 and the Archos Gamepad 2. It would be interesting to see Nintendo or Sony make something similar.

Are most DS/3DS games going to be downloadable for the Wii U?

I remember having an SNES cartridge that let me play the original Game Boy games on it....back in the day.

3ds games on wii U would make so much sense, could be a system seller. top screen tv, bottom screen tablet. Nintendo needs all they can get for wii U this would be a smart move just like the gba adapter for gamecube. As for big super deluxe handhelds, I wouldnt see anybody carrying these around so Wii U at home is as close as it gets. Playing COD online in the bathroom is an awesome experience!

So you want them to make larger versions of the larger versions of the portable consoles?

Technically the resolution of the 3DS's smaller screen is still larger than that of the Sega Genesis, and plenty of PS1 games were made using the same resolution. They could be made a bit larger and still look decent.

Maybe if they were running on a CRT.

This is why Nintendo needs to make a Super 3DS add on for the Wii U. Like the Vita TV except it's a Wii U attachment that allows you to put your 3DS games into. The Gamepad is your bottom screen, your TV is the top screen. The 3D effect will still work as long as your TV is a 3D TV, but you'll need to use glasses. This would get me to buy a Wii U at lot sooner than I plan to.

A WiiU 2/3DS subsystem I don't think would work well, at least as well as would be acceptable to them. Games will use both screens together directly as a big screen and others will use them in tandem with the action going on both. It works fine when they're a 1/4 inch apart but when you're juggling that big comfy WiiU tablet controller and your tv it just won't work. You'll have a big gap of space between them, also since they're not the same distance you'll have focusing issues with your eyes working between the two. It just won't be fluid and introduce enough consumer bitching and moaning that it isn't worth the effort.

As far as a larger than XL system, you eventually hit a wall where it's too damn expensive when you consider parts and the larger battery needed to make it doable.

So what 3DS games do you need to pay attention to both the top and bottom screens at the same time? I have 13 games and none of them do you have to focus on the top and bottom screen at the same time. The regular DS on the other hand does have a few games that utilize both screens. Feel the Magic, Rub Rabbits, Contra 4, and Resident Evil Deadly Silence(Masters of Knifing.) For the DS, most games use the top or bottom screen as a map or menu system.

Saying that a 3DS accessory wouldn't work is like saying the Wii U itself doesn't work. I mean the games on the Wii U have proved to do exactly what the 3DS has been doing, or what most DS games have done. Be nothing more than a map, your equipment screen, a menu screen, etc. I've heard that Nintendoland uses the Wii U gamepad and the screen together on one game and apparently that works fine, so why wouldn't playing a game like Feel the Magic on the DS using the gamepad work?

Sonic Rush, Yoshi's Touch & Go. A couple titles few people probably care about anymore.

I totally admit that what I'm talking about would be a very niche product, that would only appeal to a small segment of hardcore handheld enthusiasts.

But one thing that we have to remember is that the game carts are tiny, and the hardware running the handhelds are a known quantity now, and it's really just a matter of putting a bigger screen in there, and a bigger battery. The 3DS of course could be quite tricky, because of the 3D factor. Sourcing a large 8 inch 3D screen isn't going to be easy. Maybe this would be a better solution for the Vita.

Think about a deluxe Vita with a 8 inch screen, much larger thumbsticks and better triggers, etc, etc. Better stereo sound for when not using headphones. More ergonomic and comfortable. I guess ultimately the market for such a thing would be too small to make it worth it. But it can't stop me from dreaming about how cool it would be..

Yeah, this is actually a great idea. The thought of playing Mario 3D World on a big 3DTV would be really awesome. I have a plasma that is 3D compatible, and I've always wondered if there would eventually be a 3DS emulator for the PC, that I could use with my 3D plasma. If Nintendo did something officially, that would be even better, but I doubt that they would bring anything like that out in this modern day and age. Anything is possible I guess, but I just don't expect Nintendo to release anything like that, so I think our best bet is to hope that an emulator comes down the pipe one day.

I don't think we'll be seeing it either, but it'd be nice. If Nintendo is smart though, they'd do it. I mean Nintendo could advertise this as a selling point for the Wii U. The Wii U is doing horrible and what would they lose by doing this? A lot of people who don't have the 3DS might not get the 3DS because the Wii U can do the same, but these people might not have a Wii U, and they get both the Wii U and the 3DS accessory. They'd also get more sales from people who do have a 3DS and just want to play the game on TV, most of which also don't have a TV. Anyway you look at it, aside from the four people who own both a 3DS and Wii U, it's a win for Nintendo.
