View Full Version : Is there such a thing as an Xbox to Dreamcast controller adapter?

I've found adapters to utilize Dreamcast controllers on the Xbox, but I can't seem to locate anything that goes the opposite direction. Looking for a controller that won't cramp my hands for racing games like the Dreamcast gamepad does.

I don't think so. Did they make ANY controller to DC adapter? There's always the steering wheel, but I too feel your pain. Even if they did, it won't help the terrible deadzone on certain racing games.

There were Playstation adapters for it. Our resident clone/accessory YouTube reviewer did a review of one a few years ago as I recall. And I imagine that there were also Saturn adapters as well for fighting game fans.

But they don't fit the racing game genre much better as far as I'm concerned. And some DC racers put the analog triggers to good use and there's just no good counterpart on the PS/PS2 gamepad. PS2 buttons are analog but a few millimeters of throw for their pressure sensitive buttons are no substitute for an analog trigger for racers that require precision manipulation of the throttle and brake. Especially for racers that model brake lock and wheel spin.

You talking about me? :D

There is no Xbox to Dreamcast adapter, but it *might* be possible to daisy chain an Xbox to PS2 adapter, and then use a PS2 to DC adapter.

I'll have to try that later and see if it yields results.

I have seen Dreamcast to Xbox adaptors, and if you had gender changers for the pinouts, a reverse data flow would likely work through such a setup.

I'd appreciate it if you find the chance. It would certainly come in handy for Metropolis Street Racer which is the game behind the creation of this thread. I'd like to invest some serious time into it at long last but I only can deal with the DC triggers for short periods before getting uncomfortable such as a few rounds of Daytona USA.

But with the Xbox trigger design of the Controller S, I could race all day without bothering my fingers.

If all you want is a controller that's more comfortable when you play DC, you might be able to just look for a 3rd party DC pad.

Mad Catz put out a nice one, it's pretty much the only pad I use with my DC. The D-pad is a bit flaky (though still way better than a 360 d-pad), and the stick is more of a loose type than a stiff type (by design, not wearing out or anything, it's a preference thing) but it's like butter compared to crampy mccramps alot the stock sega controller.

Just a link to what I'm talking about, not an endorsement of that seller.

They come in many colors, mine is clear orange, fits the DC pretty well, IMO.

The price is certainly right. I think I'll take a chance on one of these.

What are the triggers like on it? Their positioning is probably the key thing for me. Unfortunately, the stock pad feels like everything is ever so slightly off in my hands compared to what would be ideal for me. And it's exasperated when I'm regularly using the triggers in a racing game.

Suffered any blown fuses? I understand that's sometimes an issue with 3rd party DC controllers.

I've had one of those Mad Catz controllers, they are a lot bigger than SEGA DC controllers. Wasn't a big fan. Have you considered one of the DC racing wheels? I give you props for trying to play MSR. I was/am really, really good at Project Gotham games, but MSR was just way too difficult. The requirements to advance even in the early stages are crazy, and I was pretty bummed after playing it for several days and progressing very little. This is after I had gotten I think every unlock-able from PGR 1 and 2 on Xbox.

I've had a Dreamcast wheel ever since the Ames department store chain clearanced out their inventory back in 2002 or so when they went out of business after acquiring Hills and overextended themselves. I think I paid $20 for my DC wheel. It's nice for some games but I like the convenience of just grabbing a gamepad and don't always feel like setting it up. Plus it doesn't work well in some games like MSR.

You earned all platinums in PGR2? I couldn't manage that with the cone challenges but was able to with all other event types that tasked me to drive more normally. I'm not sure I'll be able to wrap up MSR but I want to give it a fair shake at long last.

I think the best I did with the cone challenges was a minimum of silver and a few golds. They just didn't click for me.

Yeah I was pretty adept at the Kudos. I don't think I had the DLC packs though, and I never played it online because I never had an XBOX Live account. In MSR, the races and challenges/kudos are just too crazy to attain.

I don't know about Mad Katz controllers specifically, but I am very cautious when using any 3rd party controllers with Dreamcast. I bought two Performance brand controllers at a used game shop that both blew the controller port fuse in my DC console. Whoever owned them before me had stomped on the cables just enough to internally arc the wires. The ground fault it caused blew the super-sensitive controller port fuse. Once that happens, no controllers work on your Dreamcast system until you open the console and replace the fuse. These days I stick to official Sega brand Dreamcast controllers only.

You can always just get a fishing rod and use it with Crazy Taxi 2...:pimp:

There are Xbox-to-PS2 adapters and PS2-to-DC adapters so you could probably daisy-chain them, but I've never tried.
