I've been using my ps2 slim (region 1) as my primary dvd player for some time now, even got the remote for it. However, I also own many import dvds and want to be able to play them on it without any intensive modding. There is a region setting in the parental controls menu but I don't know what to do with it. Does anyone know what its for and did anyone ever figure out a trick to get this machine to play allregions without mods or bootdiscs?

The North American PS2 can be made to play other region discs, but it can't play any discs in PAL format which to me is useless for an import player. If you're just using it for NTSC discs, I know the Gameshark can bypass region coding. But most standard DVD players have hidden options to change the region coding so using a PS2 is more of a hassle, you'd always have to use the Gameshark first as a boot disc.

That option under parental controls is a bit different, it's not for region coding on DVDs. It's strictly related to parental controls which are options included on some discs. As best as I can tell the parental controls are the same in all PS2s which is why there's a region setting, you have to match it to whatever region you're in or there could be playback problems.
