Saw this link on the gamefaqs message boards, of all places...and whats more, it's a legit glitch in the game that lets you catch the little freak.

bizarre. I'm glad I don't play that game anymore. I'd be tempted to start over just to grab him.

Same here, except I sold the game 3 years ago.

Ive had a glitched mew for years, I named my starting pokemon "MEW", then saved and turned the power off and back on again. My squirtle became a MEW! And when you hook it up to Pokemon Stadium, flying Squirtle!!! LOL You can't trade it to Pokemon G or S or later though because the pokemon is defected or mutated. ;)

Aye, I read about this a while ago. What I still don't know is, if you catch Mew this way, does it still glitch up the Hall of Fame the same way the gameshark codes do?
(Now, if only someone will find a similarly legit way of teaching Surf to Pikachu.)

Good question. I'm not sure I have the patience to go through all of pokemon red again to find out ;p
You can teach surf to pikachu...all you need is pokemon stadium. Just make a team for the R-2 master cup, with pikachu on it, and pick him for every round as part of your 3 man squad. You can't have a registered team or any rental pokemon. Also, you must go through in one sitting-no saves allowed. It's a major pain in the ass to do, and I ended up just sharking myself infinite health so that I could do it. It's worth it if you want to make a useable raichu, assuming you're planning on playing other people.

I got my Mew by going to one of those tours that were around in the US a couple of years ago ('99 I think)

Haha wow that's pretty interesting, I'm gonna go try it on my Blue now. I've already got Mew on Red but that was with a GameShark - I didn't know Mew stuffed up the Hall of Fame, that lousy Missingno did that too mine.... ah well he's a cool glitch. LOL

Interesting... with this method you could potentially capture every single pokemon in the game.

Kind of off topic but speaking of which.. I'm no Pokemon fan but I just opened up this box this evening from my sister and what do you know, it's filled with all this Hello Kitty and Pokemon stuff from Japan (including Pikachu Green Tea x_x ). Here's just half of it. I have no idea where she gets the idea I like Pokemon and Hello Kitty (umm... NOT) but it's appreciated.. I guess. The GBASP cover looks pretty cool though

I was reading further into it...there's a faq on there on Gamefaqs apparently, that lists an alternate method. On your first trip to cerulean you can do it...apparently there's a guy to the left after you finish up the nugget bridge who can take the place of the gambler...by catching an abra, you can use teleport in place of Fly, to go back to the cerulean pokecenter, and then go battle the youngster, teleport back to the pokecenter, and head onto the bridge to battle mew. The trick does work on Red, Blue, and Yellow (I tested), and so, you no longer have to spend money for a mew ;p
