View Full Version : Why does the 3DS lack so much in the action-adventure & RPG genres?

Do you think devs. often reject it cause of graphical limitations or what?

Both Vita and 3DS are lacking in RPGs. Vita has more in the west if you include ports that released on another console first. Exclusives only, Vita has one less RPG than the 3DS. Retail games only. When Bravely Default and Demon Gaze release, the Vita will still be one game behind.

Oh,this is about the Vita now?
Anyway,yeah.Seriously lacking.

You bring up one portable having a lack of games when there are two portables on the market, both with a lack of games. If you want more available games, pick up both portables.

The idea that the 3DS 'lacks RPGs' is laughable (frankly I'm not surprise it's you two making such a claim, are you sure you're not the same person?)

Shall I rattle off a list? I think I'll rattle off a list.

Etrian Odyssey IV
Etrian Odyssey Untold
Devil Survivor Overclocked (strategy/RPG)
Devil Summoner - Soul Hackers
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Fire Emblem Awakening (Strategy/RPG)
Paper Mario Sticker Star
Mario & Luigi: Dream Team
Rune Factory 4
Pokemon XY
Bravely Default (upcoming)
Persona Q (upcoming)

Pleanty of RPGs, and more on the way. But I wait with baited breath how you choose to selectively invalidate most of them.

I do acknowledge a lack of action RPGs though (really its just Zelda, and that's not an rpg). Personally I'm more anoyes by the lack of quality platformers. Really its just the two Mario titles.

So in short, 3DS is an rpg paradise, compared to the other genres it supports.

I can't believe anyone responds to this troll anymore. Every thread he starts is either some poorly thought out "make a list of X" or some weakly argued premise about some perceived failure of some console or handheld.

Come on now Rick that's not fair, didn't you see what he said, Nintendo games don't count. :) Stop confusing the facts with tasty troll flakes to feed the troll with. :) I guess at least you didn't ignore the adventure aspect he asked for, oh wait, the other post didn't either mentioning Zelda but not knowing others but that's easy to overlook when you want to post to annoy people :D

Practically every game that my fiance and I have for 3DS is an RPG, and most of those are really long too so there's more than enough to keep us busy.

The reason I went with allgame.com is because they have the habit of calling action adventures "Third Person 2d/3d Action RPGs." Something that clashes with Gamefaqs' definitions.

Oh, so I missed out the bit where Sega/Atlus was bought out by Nintendo? I guess I should be looking forward to Etrian Odyssey V: Legends of the Titan Zelda and Shin Megami Tensei: Luigi's Mansion.

I think all consoles are lacking in RPG's these days. All the JRPG's that came to the 360/PS3 are pretty terrible...at least the ones I played. It's not what sells. People want more greenish/brown military shooters. I'm shocked Skyrim was such a big hit, to be honest.

Most are bad, but not all. Depending on what one qualifies as an RPG, I'm just going to name off all the potential RPGs that I thought were good. Tales of games, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza 3/4, Dragon's Dogma, and Dragon's Crown. Even though it received a lot of hate, I thought White Knight Chronicles 2 was pretty good. It's like Level 5's version of Phantasy Star Online if PSO had a quick ATB instead of real time. I also liked Atelier Totori, but less about it being an RPG and more about the gathering, time management, and completing quests.

Out of what I've played, here are the games I think weren't so great. They may have had good qualities(like Star Ocean 4's battle system, but then there's everything else.) Star Ocean the Last Hope, Final Fantasy 13, Final Fantasy 13-2(haven't played this, but has the same gameplay from FF13 so assuming,) Ni No Kuni, and the Neptunia series.

As much as I disliked FF13, Lightning Returns looks to have some pretty amazing gameplay. It's what they should have done in the first place, because it looks like if Demon's Souls had an ATB system with the class change system of FF10-2, it'd be Lightning Returns.

Anyways, yeah, I listed Ni No Kuni above as a bad game. People hated WKC2 because word of mouth or they actually didn't like it, but they loved Ni No Kuni for some reason. Both games have completely different gameplay, so it's not because of that, just that WKC2 had better gameplay and the story, although also cliche wasn't borderline boring. People probably liked Ni No Kuni for no reason other than it's a collaboration with Studio Ghibli or that you could catch monsters. The game is terrible though. Even if you ignore the retarded AI, and put them to do whatever they like, remove all spells but healing spells so they attack and use healing spells only and not go through their entire pool of MP in one battle, you practically finish battles with 95% of the damage being taken by the player character, and attack magic is essentially useless, even if the enemy is weak against it. A good melee character like the cat or tiger you get in the second area takes more damage off in a single attack combo than a spell will. You could also get the skeletons that are also in the second area, who are just as powerful and take next to no damage from physical attacks. The whole game is an effort in mashing the x button and traversing through a super cliche story that is only slightly above boring, and then a quest system that was extremely boring.

Ni No Kuni was the RPG this year over SMT4 though and apparently one of the best RPGs this generation. I know it's my opinion only, but I think people need to play more games rather than just the overrated ones they hear constantly praised. There are far more games that are worth playing other than this sparkly piece of sh**.

Not as good as SMT3 or DDS, but you 3DS owners are missing out if you like RPGs and have yet to play SMT4.

Not even going to read the rest of this list since the very first entry isn't an RPG.

Yeah. That list had a really hard time telling the difference between action/adventure games, RPGs, and strategy/RPG hybrids.

Maybe this isnt the best place for this but. I cant differ some genres as well as others and dont know if this is an RPG or Action RPG but, recently I have started playing and enjoying Dragon Quest IX. This is my first DQ game and was wondering if there was talk or if there already is one for the 3DS?

I am not that good at keeping up with more modern stuff. I need to get on it more.
