Does anyone know where to find one of these lists online? I've Googled several different variations on the thread title, hoping to find that someone had compiled such a list, but no luck so far.

In the meantime, until such a list turns up, I've started compiling one. It's a work in progress, and if you can think of any games to add or corrections to make, feel free. I've grouped them all by U.S. publisher.

Awesome idea for a thread!

I am a bit surprised that the Famicom didn't get Strider.

Japan sure dodged the bullet on a lot of bad games, but they had plenty of bad ones on their own too in their place. They missed out on a few good ones too though.

Add Square's Rad Racer II to the list, and Sunsoft's Spy Hunter. Neither have FC versions.

Gumshoe also has no FC version. That's Nintendo's isn't it?

Oh, and Mission: Impossible by Konami under the Ultra name.

Lictalon
01-13-2014, 09:36 PM
Impressive list. You see a lot of stuff that would lean towards a Western market and not Japan (like the movie- and company-based ones, and the bible adventures), but also some that surprise you.

Were many of these games developed in Japan, but just not released there? I agree that Strider's surprising - you can see the Japanese/manga influence in the graphics.

Awesome Thread.

I never knew Japan missed out on R.C Pro-Am. I really dislike racing games, but I played that one a ton. Truly an excellent game, one of the best games I've ever played on the NES. Really surprised it never got a Japanese release.

Rickstilwell1

There are also games that oddly came out in the USA before Japan during the time Japan-first was the norm for NES. The first such example is Mach Rider.

Like everyone else, I too am surprised that there is no Famicom version of Strider. I'm also surprised that the Famicom didn't get Legendary Wings, Break Thru, Silkworm, and Qix! Aren't all of those titles originally Japanese arcade games? Surprising they were never released for Famicom. And Kick Master surprised me as well. That game seems like it was Famicom bound!

I just thought of something. Wouldn't looking through a Goodset of roms give us almost all the answers? If the game only says E, UE, or U then that would mean it is either excluded from Japan or the Japanese version has a different name usually made up of a combination of Japanese words + part of the English title.

Thanks for all the input, guys. I've updated the original post with the additions made here, plus some more I dug up. This is something I felt has never been touched on: there are always lists of Famicom exclusives popping up (usually under the heading of "the best NES games you've never played" or some variation on that), but I'd never seen a complete list of non-Japanese exclusives. Which reminds me, I'd like to include some PAL exclusives as well under a separate heading, but have exactly no idea where to start. I can only think of two off the top of my head: Noah's Ark, published by Konami, and The Smurfs, published by Infogrames.

Regarding the Famicom's lack of Strider: that one's still a mystery, compounded by the fact that the manga it tied into was released in Japan. I've even asked Isuke about it, but he was unaware of what was happening on the Famicom side of things (he only worked on the arcade game).

I'm also attempting another list: a list of Famicom Disk System exclusives that were released in the U.S. as cartridges. That one's not going as well as it could.

Those are exactly the opposite of what I'm going for here. I'm not looking for Japanese exclusives, I'm looking for non Japanese exclusives.

I've made additional changes to the list. Thanks to all that have helped so far!

I added some comments to your [http://hg101.proboards.com/thread/11019/unreleased-japan-list-nes-exclusives]Hardcore Gaming thread[/url]
Mostly some of the unlicensed games being from Asian developers (like Sachen, etc.) and probably got Famicom releases.

Useful thing about Wikipedia's video game Infoboxes:

Ai Senshi Nicol
Developer(s) Konami
Publisher(s) Konami
Platform(s) Family Computer Disk System
NES
Mobile Phones
Release date(s) JP April 24, 1987
Genre(s) Action-adventure
Mode(s) Single-player
Distribution FDS disk

I'm much more used to seeing this kind of infobox there (released in Japan, not in U.S.).

I saw that (just haven't logged in to comment yet). The next time I update the list, hopefully I'll have weeded out the Famicom releases.

Very true. Thanks for the link. I admit, I've focused so much on the main list that I haven't done much with the FDS list, but this should make it a lot easier.

I didn't see Snake's Revenge on the list. That was developed specifically for Western audiences.

I recall hearing that the Tom Sawyer game released in the USA is a different game from the one released in Japan (both are by Square, I think).

Also someone talked about PAL exclusives. I know of one: Super Turrican (not the same as the similarly-titled SNES game).

That was one of the first ones I put on the list. It's the first game listed under Ultra.

There's Adventures of Tom Sawyer, released by Seta in both Japan (as Tom Sawyer no Bouken) and the U.S., and Square no Tom Sawyer, released by Square in Japan only. Two entirely different games - the Seta game is a platformer, the Square game is an RPG - but both released in Japan. Oddly, both were released in 1989.

Yep. I'm working on the PAL exclusive list, and it's on there.

Spot was released in Japan as well, by Bulletproof Software.

First post has been updated with the current list. Thanks for all the additional input, spman. I'm still researching the pirate games. Metal Fighter is so far the only one that I've found that got a Japanese release. All the others, so far, have been listed as Asian or Australian releases, which isn't the same.

A few more I'm almost certain on

WWF Wrestlemania
WWF Steel Cage
WWF King of the Ring
(oddly enough WWF Challange was released in Japan by Hot B years later according to Wikipedia, when it would have been totally out of date)
Smash TV
World Championship Wrestling
Breaktime
Little League Baseball
Galaxy 5000
Defenders of Dynatron City
Krusty's Fun House
George Foreman
Dragon's Lair
Eliminator Boat Duel
F-117A Stealth Fighter
Lemmings
Magic Johnson
The Punisher

I'm sure there's still even more that I'm not thinking of as well

SparTonberry

Dragon's Lair was released in Japan. (though like the PAL version, it uses CHR-ROM in place of CHR-RAM to reduce the infamous slowdown present in the US version. The PAL version actually seems to run in NTSC, when I play it on my top-loader. But I don't think that is a big enough difference to count it as a separate release.)

World Championship Wrestling is a license variation of Superstar Pro Wrestling for the Famicom.

Bugs Bunny Crazy Castle was a Roger Rabbit game in Japan was it not?
It was, but RR was a Famicom Disk System game. BBCC is being included in the FDS to NES list that I haven't finished yet.

Updated the list with all the recent additions. Thanks again, spman - and scaryice, that list was extremely handy. Found a bunch of games in there I'd forgotten all about. Thanks!
