View Full Version : What is wrong with my SNES?

Hello,

Recently I bought a Snes with 4 games through the dutch equivalent of Ebay. It's a PAL version. When I started playing I noticed weird errors on screen with all the games. I attached some pictures so you can see how it looks.
The games adventures of mighty max and super soccer work fine, only the startup screen is messed up. With Timon and Pumba's jungle games the error is constant on both the startup screen and while playing for example pinball. The game Asterix is even weirder. The starting screen is messed up and while playing there is nothing I can walk on, but when I jump up I suddenly stand on a tree and the environment shows. The background doesn't seem to be in sync with the game, as I can stand on air.

Things I've tried:
1. With the Snes came a 3rd party AC adaptor with 9volts and 800mA, not the right one I found out while searching on the internet. I borrowed an original Snes adaptor from my brother with 9volts and 1300mA. Unfortunately the same problem still exists. So that possibility is ruled out.
2. I tried different TV's with no luck, I used a new composite video cable(with red, white and yellow pins). I even used the original rf switch to plug it in an older TV from the 90's, but still the same errors.
3. I borrowed the game Donkey kong from my brother which works fine on his Snes, but that game won't even startup on my Snes. When I switch the nintendo on it says on the tv it can't find a signal.
4. I cleaned all the games with a q-tip and alcohol. I also put some cloth on a creditcard with alcohol and cleaned the inside of the console itself.

It has to be something inside the Snes. It seems the problem is only showing while there is non moving background like in the game menu.
The seller won't reimburse so I'll have to fix the problem on my own.

Do you have any idea of what could be the problem?

Thanks,
Stephan

I uploaded the pictures in this link so I could upload them all at once:

Have to tried cleaning the contacts on the games and the pinset in the console? Always start there if the game boots up and theres errors.

Yes, I tried that with a q-tip and alcohol and a creditcard. As explained in the first post.

Wow somehow i passed 4 entirely. Sorry bout that. Do the problem games have save batteries that may need replacing. I had mario land 2 act way wrong and it turned out to be the battery. It will say on the back label if it has a save feature or battery.

Also see if the pins in the console are all even and there. Sometimes they can get bent out of shape or broken when improperly cleaned. Ibought a sega with pins torn out. Now i check anytime i buy a console.

Bust out the multimeter and try to find any bad traces.

Thanks for replying. The games are fine, I tested them this morning on brothers snes console and they work perfect. I made a picture of the game slot inside the console, can't find any abnormalities.

I bought a nintendo screwdriver of ebay and I think it will arrive tomorrow. Will report back when I've managed to open it up!

judging from the amount of grime around the cert connector I bet you'll find a lot of junk inside the case when you open it up

Managed to open it up, and yeah it was pretty dirty.

So here are the pictures. I have no idea what to look for, I'm a noob in this area of expertise..

that cap in the last picture looks a little domed on top where it should be flat.

might be the angle but if it is domed it should be replaced, might not be causing the scrambling but it should help if it is bad

Do you mean the blueish thing on the right side that is connected with 2 pins to the board?

Also sorry for the long delay, been very busy. Tomorrow I will make a clear picture of it and see if its is really bad.

That is just the rectifier smoothing capacitor. It wouldn't cause this glitch if it was bad.
We need a better detail picture of the area I marked here:

It's possible, if it's not smoothing out that voltage ripple the components down the line from it are getting high and low input voltage.

The chip you labeled is funky to, did you take any alcohol on a q tip to it yet?
