View Full Version : Who here bought a Genesis 32X when it first came out?

Who here was hoodwinked by Sega and bought one of these dissasters for $159.99 when they first came out in November of 94?

Unfortunately, I was one of the idiots that did. I think I got Star Wars Arcade and Virta Racing Deluxe with the unit. The games were just garbage. It didn't take me too long to figure that out, and I think I was able to sell my stuff for like $99 bucks to somebody about 4 months after I bought it.

The only game that I thought was relatively decent was Metal Head. Or am I confusing Metal Head with Iron Soldier on the Jaguar? Hmmm. I'm not sure.

Well I myself bought the sorry 32x :( about a year latter for 80 bucks, then bought myself a few games, even though the 32x was barely a 32 system, just really a genesis with a few more colors and effects, I did enjoy the virtua racing deluxe, and virtua fighter back then :D

I bought it as soon as it came out.. and I kept buying games for it as I could find them. I dunno why everyone gets pissed.. so it had a short life, so what? :P Least it got me extra games to play, and the Virtua Racing on it was top notch! :D

..Course now with 32x emulation being so good, it's pretty much stored away. But I'll never get rid of it. :) And if this board and it's collecting mentality has taught you anything, it should be "KEEP ALL YOUR DAMN GAMES CRAPPY OR NOT!" LOL

My friend worked On Star Wars Arcade so I got to see that I didn't want one before it was out. I later bought one from another friend for 20 bucks.

I got mine in Jan. 2002 just so I could play arcade-perfect versions of Space Harrier, After Burner, Virtua Racing Deluxe, and of course, Knuckles Chaotix. I only have 1 game though, and that's Space Harrier.

I picked up a 32X along with my Sega CD about six months ago. Based on reviews, I was carefull in what games I got for it. I got the near-perfect arcade translations of Space Harrier and After Bruner, the enhanced version of Star Trek Bridge Simulator (always loved that game for the SNES), Star Wars Arcade, and Zaxxon Moonbase 2000. However, that game just refuses to play for me -- I've tried several copies and three units. :( I'm happy with the four games I DO have, though, and play them now and then.

I did..
I was very much into collecting for the Genesis etc at the time..

I'm pretty sure I got Star Wars Arcade and Virtual Racing Deluxe..that same day..I don't remember if they were a pack in...the box is put away..but the two games I have are in their own boxes..
I liked the games though..
I still have that same 32x and those two games still boxed from 94.

I got mine when they were pretty much giving them away. I paid $29.95
but for that I also got 2 games. Doom and Cosmic Carnage, the latter
has got to be the worst fighter in video game history. Vitua Racing Deluxe
is nearly as good as any 3-D racer

My best friend got one for his birthday when it came out. The only game he ever bought was Knuckles Chaotix. We played the crap out of that game, and that was the end of it. I think he rented Virtua Racing once, but otherwise, he (we) were completely disappointed.

I have a 32X now, along with 10 games, and it rarely gets used. In fact, it's basically only here for Knuckles Chaotix. Poor little machine.

Yep, I bought one the day it came out too. I wasn't as surprised by it as most, I had seen the thing in action at that previous year's CES in Chicago. I vividly recall being taken to Sega's "back room" at the show and being given a private demo of Star Wars Arcade (I knew one of the Sega reps) and thinking it was pretty cool, though it needed some work. Turns out that the game I saw in that demo and the one I bought were pretty much the same game, followed by a host of other 32X games that "needed more work" afterwards!

Despite the disappointment, I was able to grab most of the 32X games for under $10 and today have a complete boxed collection :)

I bought it day 1. Sold it later on. Wish I hadn't.

Star Wars was a crappy game but I had never shot down polygonal TIEs before, or skirted a 3D Death Star, or heard a near-perfect sample of the Star Wars theme, so I was happy. But the best game was easily the AAA Virtua Racing Deluxe. That is the game I miss most, awesome racing there and a smooth engine.

Later I got Doom (liked it a lot), Knuckles Chaotix (like most 32X games, very flawed but I still enjoyed it), Space Harrier, Fred Couples Golf (bad), and that's about it. Back then you could rent 32x games and I tried out almost all of them. Cosmic Carnage is the worst game on any system I've ever played. Sega was trying to make a Samurai Showdown style game I think , with the scaling-in and -out, but this was a trainwreck. A trainwreck into a nuclear powerplant next to the most populated city during the first visit from a powerful and belligerent alien race's ambassador. THAT bad.

I have VR on Genesis (w/special SVP chip). It isn't half the game that VR deluxe was. The Saturn Virtua Racing (by Time Warner) also isn't nearly as good as the 32X version. sigh ....

Also what I find strange was that 32x was the first sega console to have NO SONIC at all I recall getting Kncukles Chaotix and to my suprise there was no sonic, man the system was nice but very strange.

I'm pretty sure there was one in the works, but It never saw the light of day. They quickly axed all 32X development and had teams working on Saturn titles.

Ya well I got you all beat. I actually pre-ordered the 32X from Consumers Distributing here in Canada through the videogame catalog they instered with their catalog a few years before they went bankrupt.
In fact I got it a week before the street date but no games were released for it until a week after the street date so I just had it hooked up to my Genesis doing nothing for weeks.
I wish I hadn't paid that much for it but I don't regret getting it. In fact, I'm probably one of the only 32X fans out there. Virtua Fighter & Shadow Squadron made it worth the purchase for me.

I got one pretty quick after it was released, when I traded in my Jaguar for a Genesis and 32X for two reasons: 1) Doom crashed on my Jag and 2) Checkered Flag Sucked ass! I enjoyed Doom and VR Deluxe. And later Knuckles Chaotix, Tmek, and Virtua Fighter...

I did miss Tempest 2K and picked up another Jag at a later date...

Cheers,
Ben

I rember being about 6 I think and my dad checking me out from school about 3 hours early so we could go and get one. Needless to say we played it for hours and I wasn't dissapointed cause I was 6! I still have it and it's box/manual/plastic baggies (My dad was really big on reading directions and keeping everything neat incase he needed to pack it up) which is why i can say that it's safely packed away in its box to be taken out for use only when desired. :-D

I now have about 12-15 complete games for the system.

but joes boxed collection brings up a question....does anybody else on the board besides him have spiderman: web of fire? and where did you pick it up?

Well you aren't going to like me then. I picked it up complete in an Ebay auction with a Genesis, 32X, and 20 games. Total price was $50 for everything. This was years ago before Spider-man was revealed to be so rare. I also passed up multiple copies when it first came out.

I bought mine about 2 months after it came out, as Virtua Racing Deluxe got me hooked.

All in all, even then I really knew the system wouldn't last...

So I'm not really dissapointed or upset about its short lifespan. Knuckles Chaotix, Wrestlemania Arcade, Virtua Fighter, Virtua Racing, and After Burner have all given me several hours of fun, so it was worth the price of admission. I made the "mistake" of buying Web of Fire, and was immensely dissapointed, but I'm now glad I held onto it. Who'd have known it would have become so rare...
