Durability of a CECHL04-model PS3

Heyo!

I am being offered a PS3 for a relatively good price, which is great because I actually am interested in the old 80GB piano black, huge bulky ugly thing for it's backwards compatability and overall charm.
My only fear is that the person selling this to me bought it originally used so this bad boy has been in use probably since release in 08. I'm always wary buying newer consoles this used, since they tend to brake easier.
What's the risk factor here? Am I looking at a console that will probably break within 2 years, because I don't want that.
It hasn't been opened and overall it does seem like it's well kept, but most problems with these newer machines happen on the inside, don't they?

Im guessing that there is a good chance of you running into problems before 2 years from now.
If you are interested in it because of its backwards compatibility, I would suggest just getting a ps2 or a ps1 and a ps2 instead. No point running down a ps3 playing ps1 or ps2 games.

If you are gonna buy a ps3 used, look for something with a bigger harddrive, multiple controllers and decent games bundled in. People are dumping there ps3 stuff on CL right now because they all want ps4. Really good deals can be had if you are willing to buy a bundle.

This only applies if you MUST HAVE a PS3 with backwards compatibility, if you can live with a PS2 and a PS3 it's much more cost efficient.

If it is fully working now, and never modified, I would buy it and have work done preemptively on it. New fans, thermal paste, power supply with lower heat output, possibly even consider a reball depending how long you want it to last.

The 80 gb is my favorite model of the ps3, been using mine for 5 years now and it's working flawlessly. I prefer the fat ps3 vs the slim and the new one too, and the 80gb are more reliable than the early 60gb\20gb models.

My 60 gig is running rock solid. I've known several people that have had their later model PS3s die out on them and besides, the 80 gb model has PS2 parts missing that are in the 60 gig model and has to use emulation.

You could always get it reballed if it starts acting up, but that's gonna be an additional cost to consider, so it may indeed just be better to get a slim or superslim PS3 and use a slim PS2 for PSX/PS2 games.

my og 60 just died....for the 7th time in almost as many years :(



i sent it in to get it reballed with leaded solder, 19 blade fans, new thermal paste, new power supply and ssd (which was already present)

og 60 gig is the greatest 3 video game consoles rolled into 1!
i spent what it cost to buy a new super slim to repair and hopefully prevent future ylod or blinking red lights on my phat ps3 with no regrets. whether you're willing to do the same is entirely up to you


chances are your console is going to die in the near future as well, but then again my friend also has an og 60 that he had since about 08 and it never gave him a problem once and still going strong. the 40 gigs used smaller rsx and gpu i believe and also came with the aps 231 power supply which runs the coolest of all, so you may not even experience a heating problem and avoid ylod for some time. its always a gamble but if the price is right why not

I got burnt bad with one of those. It died pretty quick. Ended up getting a slim, thank God I still had a PS2! A lesson hard learned.

It seems that all fat PS3's will die on you no matter what especially with newer games that really push the system.

My 60GB launch system is still going strong!! If it does die I'll just buy a new slim and use my PS2 instead of getting it fixed.

My 60GB still runs fine years ago it did break down and i paid scea to repair it.Though,ive debated about keeping the console and replacing it with a slim.
