That's kind of odd, considering in SMB2, she played a lot differently also. That's one of the things I liked about SMB2; the variety it gave.
Maybe these characteristics don't have the same value in games today.

Oh well, somebody needed to get kidnapped after all. Of course they could have kidnapped Daisy in her place.

Could have just copied the Mario 2 formula, maybe with a few tweaks. Mario runs fastest, Luigi jumps highest, Toads pick crap up faster and Peach floats.

You're right, Jorpho, if they only made here play differently, it would be weird.
If they went back to the SMB2 formula where everyone was different that would be ok.
But even if they were to do something but a little more general, like have her and toad play one way and Mario and Luigi play another (like in Mario Kart), I think it would add some personality and/or value to it.
But it seems that they want everyone to be standardized now or perhaps it was laziness?

But it seems that they want everyone to be standardized now or perhaps it was laziness? There's "laziness", and then there's limiting the scope of a project to what can be reasonably accomplished. If they started making characters play differently, then they'd have to go and make sure that each level could be properly completed with every character, and testing would become enormously more complicated.

Super Mario Brothers 2 didn't have simultaneous local multiplayer.
For the kid/family friend experience they were after for NSMBWii's local multiplayer. identical characteristics across the group were important in order to provide a level playing field. I think that's the answer rather than it being unreasonably complicated on Nintendo's part to offer unique character traits.
I don't know why they just couldn't of had her control like the others though. Luigi didn't have his characteristic floaty high jump as I recall. So why would Peach have had to have her floating ability retained?
