8 bit computer, Commodore 64
16/32 bit Computer, Amiga, 500 or 1200 (get both, most things covered)
Consol, Snes
Why, they were about the biggest sellers. You are likely to always find something in your price range. And because there are more of them out there, more customers for 'R@R3' items so higher prices on ebay.
Real serious note. I collect the machines of my childhood. The ones i wanted, and the ones i owned. Its a pure self indulgant nostalger trip.

Here's an idea: Collect what you like and can afford. Don't do it just because someone else says it's the best.
Right now, I'm picking up Genesis stuff because it's fairly affordable and brings back a lot of memories. I'm also checking out SMS games since those are a whole different world from the NES titles I grew up on.
Individual thought is becoming a rarity these days, methinks...

I've personally been faithful to by beloved NES since i started collecting back in '98. 8-)
2600 games are quite fun too...and valuable to boot...so they come a close second.
Just my oppinion tho. :)

Right now i am collecting SMS, and picking up NES games here and there.
I would suggest collecting NES, since almost everyone has played it, and most games are affordable. (excluding Panesians, 6 in 1s, and the ellusive stadium events)

In all honesty, I'd love to build up an NES collection -- but I really don't have the room for one at the moment. So I'll stick with the relative handfuls of SMS games that are out there, and continue piecing together my favorite Genesis stuff. Still need to get me a Sega CD unit, though...

Personally, I collect whatever I can get my hands on. It doesn't even matter if I can play them or not. Example: I have a dozen or so Lynx games SEALED, but no Lynx. I have CD games for both the Genesis amd Jaguar, but don't have the CD add ons for either one.
I do have more than a dozen systems. On average I buy 5 games per week for the systems that I have, and 1-3 for systems that I still need.
The last comsole I bought on Ebay was a boxed 3DO, which I've been buying games for. Been lookin' for BC RACERS, which I also have for the Genesis 32X, but that version is grainy as hell. Love it though! I please let me find a 3DO copy.

Personally, I'd go for the NES and the Atari 2600. But if you want to collect all the games for a system, go for the Atari 7800 or any other short-lived system.

Actually, I'd say the opposite. I propose collecting for common systems, not just because they're easier to come across or because they have the "best" games, but because you'll take a while in collecting them all. I've been collecting NES games for roughly 6 or so years now, and I'm FAR from having a complete collection. There's always more to find if you go with a nice large console library.
But, for my personal preference, NES and Genesis is where it's at. And if you can find those boxed Genesis games (I've been finding a few lately, yay!) then all the better. They're a lot cooler to show off than just the cart itself.

i try to collect everything i feel is priced right - i wouldn't feel like a collector if i just went after one thing
but i go out of my way to collect for my favorite system Sega CD - probably my favorite because i wanted it so much when i was a kid and couldn't afford it then.

Primary collections: NES, SMS, 7800
Secondary: 2600, Colecovision
Down the road possibility: SNES
I can't see myself ever collecting for any system that doesn't have cartridge-based media.

Value wise, Genesis might be da best bet right now, but you also can't fail with the good old NES.
