okay, I have 2 questions

1) is there a difference between modding an NES to output stereo and just sticking a Y splitter to the audio out jack? I know using the adapter is just going to produce duel mono but is there a significant advantage to doing the actual mod?

2) since doing a number of component mods on a ton of systems may be convenient in the end I'm thinking its going to be costly. can anyone comment on the quality of using a RGB to component external converter? I see a number of generic looking ones on eBay for about $50, any good?

The CPU has two audio channels, normally combined into mono, so a "proper" stereo mod will split these to two individual channels. How much you enjoy the effect will depend on your audio setup, personal preference, and tolerance for having channels hard panned left or right.

For me, I don't mind it on smaller setups that use TV speakers, PC speakers, etc. It is kind of novel and I enjoy the pseudo-stereo effect. If I had one hooked up to a proper theater speaker setup it would probably drive me up the wall.

There is a variation on the mod that adds a potentiometer which can be used to blend the channels together, effectively allowing you to control the amount of separation. I think this is probably the ideal setup for all situations.
