So I don't have a Commodore 64, but I'd like to get into this system. Not sure where to start. Would I need a monitor for it? Or can it be hooked up to a tube TV somehow? My roommate obviously knows how I collect classic games, and keeps saying I should get one. But I'm not really interested in having to set up a big old computer setup, since I really don't have the space.

I also know theres a million games for it, but I really don't know where to start. I'm pretty well-versed with classic consoles like Atari's and stuff, but the computers like the Amiga and C64, I'm sort of lost. I never played much classic computer games, or modern for that matter.

Commodore 64 games are fun, but after having 2 C64 systems and 1 Amiga system I would say it might not be worth the room the systems take up.
I am pretty sure you can hook a C64 up to a TV, but you would probably have to buy a special cable. Old C64/Amiga monitors are actually very nice though.
One thing to keep in mind, all the better C64 games are on floppy disks. You would have to buy a floppy disc drive to play them, the disk drives arent exactly cheap and if you find one in the wild it could very well be broken.

If you want to just play the games, just download the rom pack via some torrent. Might take you 5 minutes to download them all. The games look and play quite well via emulation, Its what I use to play C64 games. The only game I can not get to work is Ultimate Wizard, which is an awesome game. I would suggest checking out Lazy Jones, its my favorite C64 game with awesome music.

The C64 will connect to TV or monitor, and will support S-video out, so there are video cables supporting that you can buy. You can purchase something such as the SD2IEC ( http://www.sd2iec.co.uk/id14.html ) to play downloads on via media card, although the cheaper options such as this may not support complex file types that use fast loaders. PRG are single files, D64 are whole disk images, to differentiate here.

You can use the same joysticks as for the Atari 2600, so you shouldn't have a problem there. Paddles too, if you find games that support them. Commodore was pretty savvy in making those transferable.

I'd recommend a C-128. The build quality is so much better then the breadbox. GO64!

I pull it out just to play Space Taxi and Ultimate Wizard.

I have 3 Amigas and recommend the 3000 because it can use VGA monitors.

Yeah I forgot to mention that, the 128 model is a much nicer machine.

I heard you can also get a C64 plug-n-play and hack it pretty easily to either save games to it, or hook up an actual commodore to, idk. I could be wrong about this. I'd like to just keep it as simple as my Atari 2600, if it's possible. Right now, I only have 2 pre-NES consoles, the 2600 and Colecovision, and both I have to run thru a VCR in order to play, since the RF hookup on my tube TV doesn't work somehow. But it still works well, and the picture is great for both consoles.

I'm also aware there's over 10,000 games in the Commodore library, and I love my classic 8bit games, so I'd like to have access to these. My first console was the NES and I still prefer the look of the graphics on this system to many other graphics in other games. I even prefer 8bit Megaman graphics to 16bit graphics.

Yea. And Atari shooters kick ass.

Off the top of my head here are some games I love on the C64 that still hold up :

Space Taxi
Commando
Beach Head II
Paperboy (don't let the graphics or naysayers detract you- this is an awesome version of Paperboy)
International Karate
Buggy Boy
H.E.R.O.

Paperboy on NES wasn't as bad as it coulda been, so I'm sure the C64 version's not bad. I totally suck at this game, no matter what, I just seem to gravitate towards things, and the stiff controls don't help at all, but the game is amusing and has some charm, and once u get the hang of things it's fun

The collision detection is WORLD's better on the C64 than on the NES. Personally, I enjoy the Genesis version the most, but the Commodore version is a blast too.

Yea i know what you mean, you'll hit things that you clearly were far away from on the NES version. It's the only version I've played, tho, I imagine the Genesis or SNES versions being better

Some of the games I really like on the C64:

Uridium
Q*Bert
Satan's Hollow (the best home version I've seen so far)
Jaw Breaker
Omega Race
