I think I saw my first (and last) hidden object game a couple of years ago. It was done in Flash, and it was mildly diverting for a couple of minutes. But geez, developers just keep cranking these things out! It's kind of shameless.
Does anyone here actually play these things? I'm kind of curious if they're really just doing the same thing over and over again, or if someone has actually managed to do something surprising.

Although simple I have been having fun with the Where's Waldo: The Fantastic Journey that has been ported to many systems. I found the Nintendo DS version for $5 at a thrift store and a free download of the PC version. What I like about the PC version is that if you set it to normal instead of kid's mode, the items you have to find only show the silhouette or a description of what to looks for. Beats the old school console Waldo games by far. If it seems too easy it is fun to try and set your own records for completing the stages as fast as possible. I find the dialogue a bit drawn out since the game was made primarily for kids so I usually just skip the talking with the button and get right down to the action. I haven't finished it yet, just have been trying it out a bit here and there.

There are a number of them to be found on various flash game sites, such as Kongregate.

I picked up a series called Midnight Mysteries a while back. I've only played parts 1 and a bit of 2 (out of 4 on Steam) but the games are pretty good and have a surprisingly thought out narrative. (You're a writer, you talk to the spirits of famous people, etc.)

The wife & I love the Midnight Mystery series of finder games. The best are from the Mystery Case Files though. They have a good mix of different puzzles that show up between the standard hidden object stages. The Murder She Wrote series is fun but those games have some TERRIBLE voice acting and are unintentionally funny.

So it's closely like the show it's based off of then? The acting and writing in those episodes....

I recently bought 2 collections of hidden object games.
The one collection - "Real Crimes" - is good so far. I just played through the "Jack the Ripper" game, which included a lot of logic puzzles as well as hidden stuff. I need to play the second game in that series, "The Unicorn Killer."
