The best deal I ever got was a boxed Gameboy Color for $1.50. I was in this little thrift store that never has games, run by a group of nice old ladies, and there it was for $3.00. And it just so happened everything in the store was half off this day. They also had a few boxed games I picked up for .50 each. I was stunned.

I'm not sure the exact value of it, but I know an offer was made to me by a retro game store owner for $100. It's missing the manual and inserts, which would increase the value more,on Ebay it was selling for $150.00 with the manual. I don't really like to go by Ebay prices though, cuz buy it now prices don't always reflect what the auctions are selling things at. But even without the box, $1.50 is a total steal.

Needless to say I regularly check in on this place for games now.

I found the GBC game Shantae for $3 and sold it for $150. I almost wanted to keep it, but I really needed the money. It's probably the only time I'll ever be able to find it for that price again.

A couple of years ago I came across a complete near mint copy of the Misadventures Of Tron Bonne at a garage sale (along with some other PSX junk games). They had $2 each on the games. I actually offered her $1 for the game and she took it.

Price 'ever found' is kind of relative. Back around the very late 90s into 2000 I got stuff like Aerofighters complete other than box for like $5, dead mint complete earthbound for $20, and a bubble bobble 2 game w/manual for $20. But that was well before the 2010-11 era swing of stupidity into prices so that's not a big deal as much as going rate.

About 2 years ago though while the NES/SNES started raging I got Earthbound for $2 and Shantae for $5 for the best console and handheld values.

Probably the best overall value deal was some system lot with games for stupid cheap at a garage sale. As for the ones I remember: Sharp NES w/ both controllers & remote with 18? games for $10. Another would be a NES Star Force prototype for a few bucks at a thrift store. Also got a 2600 Pac-Man Proto for a couple bucks at a thrift store. Wish I'd kept that one for its historical significance, but at the time I was feeling like a 2600 collector would enjoy it more. Didn't even sell for over $100.

Has to be the official 4X Dreamcast memory card I picked up for 15 bucks back when Best Buy was liquidating their DC stock. Yeah, it lacks VMU capabilities, but who cares?

I agree. There were a lot of "normal" prices I paid years ago that look better in hindsight.

My best finds off the top of my head:

Gamcube:
NCAA College Basketball 2k3 - 3.99 in 2014
Mega Man X Collection - 16.99 in 2013

Pikmin 2 - 5 in 2011
Skies of Arcadia: Legends - 2.99 in 2009
Digimon World 4 Boxed - 2.99 in 2009

N64:
Super Bowling boxed for 2.99 in 2005 and complete for 6.50 off ebay in 2007. - At the time, DreamTR tried to sell me his copy for $30 and said his prices were the best around. What a jackass.
Road Rash 64 Complete - 6.99 in 2012
Stunt Racer 64 Complete - 25 in 2004
Indiana Jones and the Infernal Machine Complete - 20 in 2013
Goemon's Great Adventure Complete - 8 in 2002 - As a 64 collector this is one of my favorite finds. Excellent game.

Depends on the context. In terms of outright freebies, my video game collection started when I found an Atari Super Pong Ten, complete in box, in a trash pile nearly 20 years ago. Sadly, I didn't keep it that way, and the box and manual are long-gone. Did manage to find another Super Pong Ten, loose but in decent shape and with the external paddle controllers, at a flea market last year for $11. Also was given an Atari 7800 with games and controllers, an Atari 2600, a couple of Mattel Intellivisions, a Coleco Telstar Alpha, and a Magnavox Odyssey 300 by different people several years back.

In terms of more recent finds, I picked up an Atari Video Pinball console (white version), in box, at a flea market a few years ago for $15. At a recent yard sale, I bought a box with a Nintendo 64 with controllers and cables, several N64 games, several Nintendo games, and a few SNES games in it, for $20. At a recent ham radio swapmeet, of all places, I bought a large plastic bin full of video game stuff for $40. Inside was the following:
*A four port Atari 5200 with controllers, cables, Atari 2600 adapter, and games
*An Atari 7800 with controllers, cables, and games
*An Nintendo NES with controllers, cables, and games.
Several months later, at the same hamfest, I bought three boxes full of Commodore 64 stuff for $20. Three C64s, two 1541 disk drives, cables, peripherals (including the rare Magic Voice module!), and games.

My most memorable tale of "The one that got away" happened at a long-defunct flea market in the area, about 15 years ago. While trolling it one day, I spotted something I'd heard about, but had never seen: a GCE Vectrex. It didn't have any games with it, but I spent a few minutes playing Minestorm on it, and was immediately hooked. I asked the price, and was told $10. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough money on me that day, and my mother refused to loan me the money, so I went home broken-hearted. I went back the very next weekend with the money, but as you can guess, it was gone. :bawling: Fortunately, many years later, a friend of mine managed to find another Vectrex in a record store, priced at $45, and bought it for me. It didn't seem to work when I first tried it, freezing up after being powered up for a minute or so, but the issue eventually cleared itself up mysteriously.

Probably my best video game deal ever was my Atari "Star Wars" arcade machine (http://www.digitpress.com/forum/showthread.php?110750-Atari-Star-Wars-help-(Now-with-pics!!!)) (cockpit cabinet), which I got for FREE from a friend. The flyback transformer (aka "Dead Red") didn't work, the molding had seen better days, the roof over the seat portion was missing, and I had to pay $80 to rent a U-Haul truck to take it home (even though said friend lived a mile away from my house), but I think I did fairly well, regardless. :D Hoping I'll be able to get it running one of these days. More pics here (http://www.electronixandmore.com/adam/temp/arcade/starwars.html).

Eric had three particularly memorable finds last year.

1. Last spring, he went to an alley garage sale where he didn't find anything. Nearby was an old lady having a sale of her own. He checked it out and found some Game Genie stuff. Asked her if she had anything else. After a few minutes, she came back outside with her SNES games for sale: Chrono Trigger CIB, Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past loose (French-Canadian edition), Final Fantasy II CIB and Final Fantasy III loose. She asked $20 for Chrono Trigger, and $10 each for the other games, for a total of $50. Obviously, he bought all four games, and then resold Zelda (since we already owned two copies) for that price. Those were HER games. She's an RPG gamer, and that's all she ever played! She kept one game only, Mystic Quest.

2. One day, while perusing Goodwill, Eric found in the bottom of a bin minty CIB copies of F-Zero, Tales of Symphonia and Ikaruga for GameCube. Price paid: $4 each.

3. Last fall, we found a seller on Kijiji (which is like Craigslist) who was selling his Dreamcast with a couple of controllers and three VMUs, as well as several original games, for $50. Among the games were Power Stone 2 and Marvel vs. Capcom. We resold Power Stone 2 for $50, which basically cancelled out our investment. :)

Hmm, a few come to mind.

I bought Conker's Bad Fur Day and Majora's Mask for $10 a piece at Toys R Us when they were clearing out their N64 stuff in 2002/2003.

Ninja Gaiden Trilogy for $35 and Earthbound for $50 some years ago on ebay. I didn't have any idea they would shoot up in price so much.

Mighty Final Fight for $15 or $20 about 10 years ago at a local store. It's still the only time I've seen it in the wild.

Contra III for $5 at that same store many moons ago. Of course that was the going rate back then.

In Jan/Feb of this year a friend sold me all of his SNES games, 18 total games. All had the boxes in various condition, and most had manuals. He sold me all of them at $5 a piece. The highlights: Marvel: War of the Gems, U.N. Squadron, TMNT IV: Turtles in Time, and Final Fantasy II. I showed this haul off on my blog and youtube channel :onfire:

Cowboy Kid, $5 loose cart, at a time when the game was going for $40-50 on ebay. Prices on it now have spiked further. Bought it about 2 years ago at a PC parts and repair shop when they briefly started selling old games (the one regret for me, not buying the common SF Alpha 3 PS1 they had there the same day, d'oh).

I'm not counting freebies though. Lotsa my collection was given to me, like my SNES used to be my roommates, my NES and Genesis were my uncle's, along with maybe 30 NES games, 10 Genesis games, and 5 or 10 SNES games. If ur talkin good freebies, my roommate gave me his SNES games for xmas a few years ago, including DK Country, Megaman X, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, and Killer Instinct. He accidently threw Chrono Trigger in there, but I felt bad taking it, since it's expensive, so I returned that to him. He also gave me his complete SNES system. It's really yellowed, but it works great.

I forgot one, free SNES and for the cost of a cheap bottle of whiskey (cost $2.47) Final Fantasy 3 SNES.

Edit: Image Fight X-Multiply Arcade Gears PS1 release, $50, you won't get one that cheap online, bought almost a year and a half ago. And off Ebay, Elevator Action Returns for the Saturn minus spinecard, an amazingly low $20.

I forgot to add one, how I with barely any work scored Bonk NES for free back in late 2010. Guy posted this craigslist ad for $50, just listed it as a Nintendo with accessories and 17 games. I see what looked like Bonk in the ad (not great but still visible if you look picture) along with a lot of first party and solid third party games, the nintendo game pleather carrier, system (looked like crap with stickers), and other stuff like manuals and sleeves, extra controllers. Sure enough it was that game along with SMB1-3, StarTropics1+2, Castlevania, Gradius, Jackal and various others about 1/2 with manuals. I ended up keeping Bonk along with about a 1/3 of the other games, carrier, manuals, spare controllers. Sold the system alone after fixing it up with the games for around $100 or a little more to a local about a week later. That was a nice one, never found a rare (legit, earthbound isn't rare), since.

An old high school friend lent me his copy of Panzer Dragoon Saga years ago the last time I saw him. Not that I wouldn't give it back to him, of course. Other then that I bought a cheap copy of Lunar: Eternal Blue for 10 bucks, bought a sealed Link to the Past for 20 bucks (which I sold on here), and use to snag up quality Genesis games like Shining Force II for peanuts when places like Gamestop were pushing out their older selection of games.

Best deal I have ever found was a collection I had bought two years ago from a guy on Craigslist for $900. Around 50 consoles and 1k games. I had so much stuff I don't think I bought any thing else retro for 6 months afterward. Here's an incomplete list taken from an old post.

14 Atari 2600s (4 are heavy 6'rs) ~300 loose games, 40 boxed
boxed Atari 7800, 5200, Jr (~25 boxed 7800 games, bunch of loose 7800, 26 5200 games)
Atari XEGS (32 games)
Bally Videocade (20 games)
2 Colevisions (~60 games)
6 different intellivisoins (Reg, Super Pro, III, Sears version, Sylvania, II) (~75 boxed games, bunch loose)
2 boxed Odyssey 2, the Voice (48 games)
Fairchild (5 games)
Arcadia 2001 (9 games)
3 boxed NES Action sets, 1 Power Set (141 loose nes games, 6 boxed)
2 Sega Master Systems, Orange tip Phaser (75 games, 1/2 boxed)
2 Sega Gen. non tmss, CD model 1
Neo Geo Aes (6 games)
Panasonic 3DO (26 games, 7 are vivid interactive adult games)
Sega Saturn, Gamecubes
triangle Brown pong system and ~20 other various pong systems.
Tons of other crap, 2 new atari track balls, 2 new intellivioce, 4 new nes satalites, pc games, odd controllers. Power Glove

I once traded an N64 Wrestling game for a Sega Genesis and Sega CD (both model 2) and a bunch of games. This was in like the late 90's early 2000's when the N64 was the biggest thing and the PS1 and such.

Another good deal I got was Lufia 2 SNES cart only for 5 bucks.

Some of tje regular guys came in asking how to set up their new virtual boy today. It was complete in box. I helped out and noticed a white sticker on the box with $1.00 on it.... they smiled and said they just bought it with their change at the thrift shop down the road. It looks like it was used maybe once. The visor foam looked new and it had tennis with it. Blew my mind. It also had a flat new power adapter box in it with said adapter. An amazing find that made me jellies. But happy for em.

Sega Saturn with two controllers, a bunch of games (including Shining Force III-complete), Sega CD 2 with games (including Keio Flying Squadron complete and near mint) and Phantasy Star complete- $25

Bubble Bath Babes, Hot Slots, Peek a Boo Poker, Action 52, Caltron 6 in 1, Phantasy Star IV, $5 each and complete. (Video store closeout)

Loose Tengen Tetris: $2.99

First Issue of Nintendo Fun Club News- probably $3-5 as I bought it with a few other things.

That's all I can remember.

^Yoshi, that is insane. When did you score all those NES games at the video store? Late 90s or so? I rarely saw unlicensed games at video stores back in the day, so that is unreal.

My biggest deals over the last few years are:

Snatcher CIB & CB for $7.99 both times at the same shop about a year apart.

Snow Brothers NES with manual $14.99

Power Blade 2 loose for $30

There's definitely more but those are the biggest ones I can remember off the top of my head.

If were talking price not too long after GTA Vice City came out and saw it's first price drop I wanted to play it sooooo bad but couldn't afford it, I was in City Market one day and they had a brand new copy in the bargain bin for $19.99, I knew it was marked wrong but played stupid and took it to the register, they sold it to me for that price and I played the hell out of it. Got four PS2 network adapters at Gamestops 75% off PS2 sale for 75 cents a piece!

The late 90s/early 00s were the golden age of finding cheap NES, SNES and Genesis games. Every video store had them marked down to nothing. I wish I had gotten a lot more back then, but I was more into Dreamcast and PS2 at the time, while my older consoles basically collected dust. I remember 2600 games selling for big money around that time though.

[QUOTE=mailman187666;1996769]I found the GBC game Shantae for $3 and sold it for $150. I almost wanted to keep it, but I really needed the money. It's probably the only time I'll ever be able to find it for that price again.

What. The. HECK. Shantae is $150 now - wait, I just checked the prices - it's gone up to over $200?

No way!!! I don't believe it. I remember when that game came out and was being reviewed new. :yipes: I feel old.

As for my best find, probably a loose Genesis for $5, or Golden Axe Warrior CIB for $15 on July 12, 2009.

Or maybe 57 SNES, Genesis, PS1, N64, and Dreamcast games for $17. True a lot of them were sports games, but 29 cents a game, with some games as cheap at 7 cents each? Good greephe, that's a steal no matter what the games are!

My best finds were all pretty close to each other in 2002 - the same year I joined Atariage. I'll just cut and paste the quotes here.

I just started collecting again after many years, just some of the common stuff though, I'm not going to go nuts spending hundreds of $$$ on Quadrun or something like that. Anyway, I got started because of two finds.

One was at a yard sale. Drove up looking for nothing in particular when I spied an all black (vader) shape sitting on the box in the distance. I walked up and realized it was an atari. Underneath in a box was about 40+ games. I asked the lady the price, expecting about 40 or 50 bucks (this is Canadian mind you) and low and behold she said ten bucks for everything. I practically wet myself but with trembling hands managed to pull a ten from my wallet. I got to the car with the box and realized it was really heavy so I pulled the one box up and found another underneath with about another 30 or 40 games. Then the lady came up to me and said she had MORE games in the house, went inside and came out with another box of about 40 or so games. Well by the time I got home I found myself with a darth vader Atari with 120+ games (none really rare but I'm not big on the rare ones anyway), paddles, joysticks, etc for 10 Cdn. I've NEVER found that much for that little in my life!

The other find was at a local Value Village. BOXED games in packages of two for 69 cents each!!! Mostly common stuff but I picked up a boxed Double Dragon and Kung-Fu Master. 22 games altogether for 10 Cdn. I had a coupon too!!!

Both these events happened within a week of each other.

So I hit another, not so well known store. Nothing special. A few old DOS games but nothing special. I'm feeling bold so I go up to the door to the back room and knock and a nice little old man in his 70's comes out and I ask if he has any Atari games.
"Sure do!" He says with a big grin. Heart begins to race. He pulls me into the back room. Wow! He pulls out a big cardboard box with games. In the corner, several 2600 jr's and 7800's plus Atari computers with games.
So for $40.00 (after haggling) I walked out with a 7800 complete with 20 7800 games including 6 that were boxed and mint (origian price tags and plastic wrap) and 79 2600 games. Nothing spectacular except for Pete Rose Baseball and Track and Field. Two nice finds in themselves but I wound up with about 40 that I didn't have and 40 doubles.

Went back to the same thrift store as above about a week later:

Cool! So for 10 bucks I got:

2 Atari 2600 jr's with two different kinds of silver metal labels
12 2600 games, all common.
9 Atari 800 carts including one called "Captain Beeble" - is that rare?
A bunch of commodore stuff including 5 carts, tapes, books, RF's

I have told this before....
Got a box of over 100 loose NES games at a flea Market for $80. Turns out, I let the box sit in my office for several months. One of my friends wanted to borrow my Zelda cart. I remember seeing a label-less Gold Zelda cart in the box. When I pulled it out, I realized it wasnt a Zelda cart.....it was a Gold NWC cart. Not a bad buy.....works out to 80 cents a cart.

Also picked up a Mega Man 2 NES proto for $3 and a Crystalis proto for $3 each.

Before anyone asks....they are all long gone.
Sold a few items but last years Colorado Forest Fires took my entire collection. I had an huge collection(some complete collections in over 25 systems), its all gone. Pinballs, arcades, 5000 comics, more video games than most people have ever seen.....up in smoke.

Damn, were you in Black Forest? I had a lot of friends and coworkers evacuated last year as well, but only knew one person who had losses there. The Mountain Shadows fires in 2012 hit a lot more people I knew and that one was just insane. Either way my condolences, I'm hoping this will be a year without fires.
