When I looked inside, I noticed mice had made a nest in the styrofoam.....and there is some urine on the inside of the box that leaked to the outside. 95% of me says I need to throw it away, right away. 5% of me says I wish I could salvage it. I know you'll alll say to toss it, but figured Id see if anyone has any ideas to keep it alive.

unless you like infection and disease, you are going to have to take it to the shed in the back with the shotgun, it's time.

Lysol the inside of the box, use a roll of food wrap around the box.

Yeah...it's really not worth handling and breathing that stuff. If you insist on salvaging it, wear nitrile gloves and a mask, then take a long shower. Seriously, though...don't fuck with mouse poo.

If certain areas are soaked through,, the only way to kill all the germs would be to immerse those parts in a bacteria cleaning substance. The Styrofoam is probably totally shot, unless you were able to cut off the affected parts. Basically the end product would be a box that is warped from cleaning and not worth much more than a loose system.

I don't know what happened but there are two threads for this. Here's the original:

I would think the urea and possible nastiness would not be a good host for a system if you decide to box it up. I'd just end it's misery and see if another pops up soon

It'd be one thing if you had a cardboard box with evidence of mouse activity around the items. One of my best finds ever was 10-12 cardboard boxes worth of quality video game stuff, but there were mouse droppings in a few of the boxes, which made me wince as I'm a bit paranoid about hantavirus (I remember when it hit in the early 1990s, and it was scary stuff).

However, the contamination was fairly localized -- the mice hadn't voided or chewed on any of the items directly -- and didn't look fresh, and almost everything in those boxes was plastic (either loose carts or jewel cases). So I took it all outside, cleaned each piece with a bleach & water solution while wearing rubber gloves, and was able to salvage pretty much everything.

I also bought a Sega Master System set in a plastic display/console case that had mouse droppings inside it. Again, I carefully cleaned the whole thing with bleach water outdoors, and never had a problem. (Fortunately the system box and most of the games were stored elsewhere.)

But a system box with mice nesting inside it, and enough urine to soak through? No thanks. Even if you don't get hantavirus from it (unlikely in Massachusetts), it's likely to be...aesthetically displeasing. And any effective disinfectant treatment -- sunlight, bleach water -- will inevitably damage the box anyway.

Just toss it. At the end of the day it's just a box.

Kill with fire. Then burn the fire when you're done.

It's a Nintendo 64. We're not talking something so truly rare and unique that it can't be replaced. Let it go. It's a piece of unsanitary cardboard. Your collector cred is still in good standing.

I put it out of its misery, its in the garbage. If it were a box to a vectrex or Neo Geo AES, I would have done what I could to save it. An N64 box, its just not worth it. I just hate to throw things like that away, but I didnt even want to bring it in my house.

You should have put it up on ebay as a special "Mickey Mouse" edition.

Or thrown it out. I guess that was the right call.
