Tetris and Dr. Mario (1994)

Does anyone remember Tetris & Dr. Mario? This 1994 two-for-one cartridge was just that: enhanced versions of the two respective great puzzle games for the NES ported to the Super NES.

But there are some notable differences on the SNES port compared to the respective NES ports:
1. Most of the music for Tetris was from its Game Boy counterpart because the "Nutcracker Suite" song used for the "A" type music is not present. Instead we hear "Korobeiniki."
2. The rocket scene in Tetris that plays after you manage to score a huge number of points in the "B" type game is removed, as was the tune that played in it ("Carmen Overture" in the NES version; and some unknown "Hip" Tanaka tune heard in the Game Boy version)

The SNES game has different timing, scoring and other requirements as well and I really just don't remember it all.

Why didn't Nintendo throw their 1992 Yoshi (Japanese title: Yoshi no Tamago - lit. "Yoshi's Egg"; European and Australian title: Mario & Yoshi) into the mix? That was another puzzle game in the vein of these two. Then this game would become Tetris, Dr. Mario & Yoshi.

I don't know, could have put Panel de Pon(tetris attack) on there a well. I think they just wanted to capitalize off their original largest sellers of the NES which were those two.

The "Fever" music from Dr. Mario also has an extra coda, much like all versions of Dr. Mario after the NES version.


Why didn't Nintendo throw their 1992 Yoshi (Japanese title: Yoshi no Tamago - lit. "Yoshi's Egg"; European and Australian title: Mario & Yoshi) into the mix? That was another puzzle game in the vein of these two. Then this game would become Tetris, Dr. Mario & Yoshi.I might speculate that some weird licensing thing may be responsible since it was developed by Game Freak (the developers of Pokemon), but I think it's more likely that Yoshi just wasn't a very good game.

Yup, forgot it didn't get made until 1996 and the other game is 1994. I suppose Yoshi's Cookie would have been nice but it was already on a cart, but that Yoshi game just isn't all that fun.

Nintendo only owns the copyright to the 8-bit versions of Yoshi's Cookie.
BPS originally wrote Yoshi's Cookie as a game called Hermetica but they sold the NES code to Nintendo but kept the SNES code (so Nintendo probably licensed the Mario content to BPS for the SNES release).
... though apparently Hermetica was originally created by company called Home Data (credited for the SNES game, they made some other games but I think they most made porn mahjong games :P ). Now some IP holding company owns the game (licensed to Nintendo for the GameCube version, and probably re-licensed for Virtual Console, which is why it is, I THINK, the only game COMPLETELY deleted from the service).

The Nintendo Power preview (of the SNES version) I remember reading only mentioned that Nintendo bought the NES version. It does not mention the origins of the GB version. But considering the GB still has the title Hermetica in the debug menu, it must've also been in development at the same time as the NES and SNES.
