View Full Version : Should I have bought these?

I was short on cash (but could have charged) two PSX titles, used, which I passed on because I wasn't sure.

Final Fantasy Chronicles $30 used
Final Fantasy Anthology $30 used

Both had both discs, and the inserts were intact mint. However, both of these had discs which had either no scratches or a some scratches, though nothing excessive. I didn't buy. Maybe I should have? The people said they get these titles in used very seldomly, like once every 6 months or so. Since I am new to PSX games, are they durable and do the systems read them fine, or will they skip with scratches? I could have picked them both up right then...but didn't.

I thought I should ask here first, since obviously just about anyone here is more knowledgable than me :)

2 Awesome games that still regularly go for $50 a piece. If you like the FF series I'd say do it.

Used $50 or new $50? Do scratched PSX discs work fine or are they going to skip and stuff making it unplayable?

I really know nothing about video game discs! I know music discs have error correction...but for games?

If you love Final Fantasy games go get them.

But as far as scratches go, have any of you heard about a device called the
Disc Doctor? This device litterally buffs out all the scratches and nicks. I
use it myself for both PSX and DVD discs. One time I bought a PSX game
used for 50 cents. I got it that cheap because it was badly scratched, it
was like someone took a nail file to it. I simply put it in the Disc Doctor
minutes later I was playing it.

Seems in the future we will all be looking for games that were not disc doctered so I would suggest only using it when you must.

NOTE: I have no plans to fix the disc. How are scratched discs handled by the PlayStations and PSones (which is what I am using)? If it's going to screw up and skip and stuff, I don't want it. The place closes in 2 hours and it's a half-hour drive away :)

Who knows if they will be there later?

Hmm....I'm thinking of doing this eBay instead. I'll pay $20 more, but I might be able to snag a $13 strategy guide along with it. The guides by themself aren't too cheap.

For what it's worth I've seen Chronicles several places lately at $25 NEW.

You can still find Chronicles new around for about $45, but you won't find Anthology around anymore and it's becoming increasingly harder to find. Those prices I quoted you were used for anthology, new for chronicles.

It all depends on the scratches in the disc. Worse comes to worst, buy the games and test them instantly. If they don't read then take them back and then go off ebay, but be sure you ask them if you can get money back if they don't work.

My local EB, best buy, walmart, and target all have chronicles for $30.00 still in stock.

Damn! I just checked EB Games online and those other places mentioned, plus Amazon. Nothing :( The only NEW one's I'm able to find around here are Origins, VII, VIII, IX, and Tactics.

Whatever you do, do NOT use the Skip Doctor. You will KNOW that you've done it afterwards because all the sheen is gone from the CD.

Usually the PSX & PS2 can handle some scratches, but if it looks like the previous owner took it to the beach & played frisbee with his dog with it, don't get them. IIRC that black coating on the back of the CDs kinda "lessens the blow" of the scratches.

For what it's worth, at blockbuster we have a disc clean and repair kit by Memorex for $40, it doesn't screw the disc like the disc doctor does, and it seems to work pretty well.

30 bucks each isn't bad, but they certainly aren't rare games by any stretch of the imagination. I find them quite often at used CD stores and the like, in good condition, for under 30. I believe that Gamestop or EB sells them 34.95 used, but I haven't checked recently, so don't take my word on it.

$50 is definitely way, way too much for either game, even by ebay standards.

almost all real video stores around here or music stores for that matter have professional disc fixers, as in real i mean not retail garbage, find a place that is serious about gaming or music, cd wise. EB and gamestop certainly dont count in my opinion. and these places fix discs for $5 a piece or less if you know them. i am in the know with somebody who owns a music store and he sells some cd's that people sell to him, he buys......cleans them all......and sells them. all of the cd's that come from there look brand new.

hopefully there are other places in the world like this

AFAIK, most Gamestops should be close to $29.99 (used) on these two games. They were $50, but a price drop this week brought them down. As long as the scratching isn't too severe, they should be fine. Both are worthy of your $30 each. PSX discs can generally take quite a beating before they don't work.

Also, avoid that Game Doctor/Skip Doctor/whatever. It is junk. Makes your games look like trash.

I have'nt used my Game Doctor on any of my game CD's (have'nt needed to, take good care of them and only get good quality used games), but it's worked wonders on a few of my music CD's.

I was given one of those black and green things. it does dull up your discs, but they work. it's fixed quite a few without a probem. However when i do pick up a used game, and it's shine is gone, i will not buy it, who knows what was done.
