Hello all. Just got a Super Scope off of craigslist, CIB (yes, EVERYTHING was with it besides the plastic wrap!). I tried it with the receiver that came with it, and it wouldn't respond to the Super Scope. Through a stroke of sheer luck, I happened to have another receiver I got at Play N Trade bundled with a Konami Justifier (yes, I know...), and it works!

Faulty one will register a shot by itself, and then become dead. I'm assuming that this means there is a short between the power circuit and the signal circuit somehow. Anyone have suggestions?

If you've got at working one, open them both up and go to down with a multimeter to make sure the continuity matches in all the places it should.

I probed around on the bad one a bit. Going by the port, there wasn't any continuity on the pins besides between power and ground. The good one yielded results of over 1 kOhm to several MOhms between ground and the other pins. Opened up the bad one. Could not get a reading on the two capacitors. Bottoms of them looked a bit swollen. Banking my money on that. Not sure how to open the RF shield that houses the IR receiver, so I cannot verify if there are any problems in there, unfortunately.

Well, I recapped the dang thing. No difference, other than the frequency in which it fires by itself. A friend at work told me that diodes are the most common point of failure he'd encountered working in circuit repair. Unless I've overlooked it, the receiver doesn't have any diodes (aside from the infrared photodiode, of course, which checked out fine). Does anyone have any ideas? Either way, I've got a golden unit to check against, so I'll post if I figure it out.
