So the bad news is I collect cart only SNES games, I actually sold off my boxes to pay for more games at one point. But only because they weren't in very good condition, the ones that were nice I kept. I sold my beat up Chrono Trigger box for $50, I consider that a win-win honestly. Also huge kudos to dra600n for selling me EarthBound. Thank you! And to my friend Xiados who gave me half these games.

What about the Koei NES games Like Bandit Kings of Ancient China, Genghis Khan, Nobunaga's Ambition 1 & 2, Romance 3 Kingdoms 1 & 2, Gemfire, Uncharted Waters?

Daria
06-01-2014, 10:30 PM
I forgot Uncharted Waters had an nes port. The rest however... You know what? I probably should add a strategy section, or remove the strategy games from the Snes section. I suppose it doesn't make much sense to include one and not the other.

I'm just glad to see you're still posting cool threads like this and collecting RPGs. I just started Wizardry for NES tonight and my characters are already level 6 with around 40HP except my wimpy Elf-Mage who started at 4 HP and now only has 16. That's ok, it'll catch up when it becomes a Samurai. It's not like it'll get hurt much in the 6th position. This time I am not going to use Game Genie at all.

bb_hood
06-02-2014, 12:52 AM
You should get Uncharted Waters New Horizons next, its the best game you dont have. Its really really good. Snes and genesis are the same game but snes has better music.

Also I wouldnt consider Festers Quest a RPG at all, but it is an awesome game. Some of the heaviest beats on any nes cart.

Wow, those are great collections for the NES and SNES. I'm not really an RPG guy but I would like to be, I guess I haven't found the right one yet (I'm talking turn-based, not like Zelda). I am curious about your thoughts on FF Mystic Quest. I bought it because it was recommended as a good starter RPG, but it gets bashed a lot. I enjoyed the little bit I played of it, but I moved and never finished it. Is this a good place to start or would you recommend something else?

I wouldn't consider Gremlins 2 or Blaster Master RPGs at all, not even borderline. They're definitely action games.

Edmond Dantes
06-02-2014, 12:46 PM
All I can say is I am so jealous!

Seriously, I'd give the left half of my soul to own all those RPGs.... including the ones I didn't even know existed!

(I object part-way to Might and Magic being called a "Dungeon crawler" by the way... it's got a lot of non-dungeon environments. But whatever, it's still probably the best RPG on the NES, unless one of the ones I've never heard of is significantly better)

I'm not really an RPG guy but I would like to be, I guess I haven't found the right one yet (I'm talking turn-based, not like Zelda).

Unless you already tried it and it didn't click, or it's too expensive(totally understandable, as it always had been, though there's a DS port now, and I think a digital download), Chrono Trigger. Not sure the price of this one nowadays ether, but Super Mario RPG: The Legend of the Seven Stars might be a good one to start with as well. If not one of the Suikoden or Grandia games(PS1 onward though).

If you like Zelda, hopefully any action RPG would suffice as well. Crystalis on the NES. Brain Lord, Soul Blazer, or Illusion of Gaia(though it's more action-adventure alongside Zelda) on the SNES(I'd say Terranigma too, but that'd be an import from the UK), and any of the Ys series(1st on the Master System or both the first couple on one disc for the Turbo CD, 3rd on Genesis/SNES/Turbo CD).

All recommendations from another non-RPG person.

~700 North American releases for the NES and both major 4th generation consoles, a lot is going to slip through the cracks, and go unnoticed.

Add to the fact that these games/genres were always niche, no matter how much lip service the internet gives them. Zelda sold the best out of everything here, and even those games have never been in the league of Tetris or the Mario series(even Mario Kart has always outsold Zelda games). The best selling RPG's sold to ~2-7% of all console owners during this period of time. The ones selling to 3-7% mostly being because they were a little more popular in Japan, but were never going to see those kinds of numbers in North America.

I hate some RPGs because you have to figure out for yourself where to go just to get any more than 1% of the way through the game. Other types of games (and good RPGs) it's instantly obvious where you need to go. Super Mario 64, jump into paintings. You'll stumble upon where the stars are if you tinker around with it. Sonic, follow the map. Ditto for 2D Mario. Elder Scrolls Oblivion, you get directions pointed out to you. But some RPGs - and some other games period - make you figure it out, and fuuuuuk that. Of course, many other non RPG games such as Sonic 06 are the same way. Of course, fuuuuuk that whole game. Then again, I love some RPGs.

As for fuuuuuk, it was in the credits of the Master System Space Harrier. The art director was listed as "FUUUUUK" :ass:

Most of the time online I hear the opposite, where people are tired of all the hand-holding present in newer games.

Just making an observation. It's Wizardry 5 Heart of the Maelstrom, not 6. I think you're mistaking the guard of the sword for another roman numeral.

Looks like Arkista's Ring to me.

@Daria - Seconding what someone above me said: Heart of the Maelstron is Wizardry V, not VI. You are indeed mistaking the sword guard for a numeral (it happens to the best of us).

Wizardry VI was called Bane of the Cosmic Forge and the SFC version was Japan-only. Are you collecting Super Famicom games?

Yeah, I was listing titles while looking at the photos. So the sword guard did indeed magically morph into an extra roman numeral. Thanks for pointing that out, ill fix that next time Im sitting at a real computer. I probably should have noticed sooner, but honestly, not a big Wizardry fan - or of dungeon crawlers in general.

Only SFC games I collect are translated ROMs on my wii. ;)

I know at least one Sega CD RPG you're missing: Dungeon Master II: The Legend of Skullkeep. I didn't see that in your collection.

(I thought it was a PC port over since the original Dungeon Master was a PC game, but apparently the Sega CD version is actually the original and the PC version is the port. Of course, that was on Wikipedia so I don't know if that's bull or not...)

Random fact: There's at least one Dungeon Master game (Chaos Strikes Back) which was PC only, so you can never get the complete series on consoles alone (and the fifth and final installment was Japan-only, for the Saturn).

Darlin' Daria - You might want to look at Revengers of Vengeance for the Sega Cd - a truly awful game (the only one I can think of that was worse was King Arthur and the Knights of Justice for the SNES) but it did have an rpg mode of sorts - it is pretty obscure (as such things go) and was a weird hybrid game that didn't do much of any of its modes very well.

Edmond Dantes
06-14-2014, 01:49 AM
Ah, okay. I must've just not seen it the first time.

Still I can't shake this nagging feeling that there's at least one Sega CD and one Saturn RPG you don't have.

Intensely jealous of this collection, by the way. If you ever happen upon a second copy of Vay, let me know.

Some people consider "The Space Adventure" for the Sega CD to have some RPG elements - I can't say for sure since I didn't get very far into it - it was really pretty boring.

Edit - a couple of notes for the genesis games - Gemfire was also available on the Genesis and the really great strategy game "Master of Monsters" should probably be included with the Shining Forces and Warsong.

Edit - a couple of notes for the genesis games - Gemfire was also available on the Genesis and the really great strategy game "Master of Monsters" should probably be included with the Shining Forces and Warsong.

Don't worry Bear, I own Master of Monsters. :P

Worse than King Arthur...? Oh yay. :/

I'll check it out though, thanks for the suggestions.

That game is right up there with Brigandine and Dark Wizard in terms of quality - I have often wondered how they could screw up the remake on the PS1 so badly.
