Most of them are 0's and a lot of the ones that are 1 or 2 seem wrong. I know its really just starting to leave all the main stores, but I was wondering when will they update the rarities on them? Its not as fun collecting when you don't know how rare the game is you just bought lol.

Probably never. Sadly.

The DP Guide is designed to be editable online, but most of the old contributors don't want to add or edit games one-at-a-time. (I'm working on an option for them to import and export CSV, but there's no delivery date for when it might be done.)

So the only one who really makes changes to the guide is Joe, and he's a very busy person. Therefore the guide doesn't see many updates.

Idk, I went on Amazon to find Godzilla Unleashed cuz I've been on a real Godzilla kick lately, and its selling for like $120 complete, seriously?? This game is rare??? Idk wats happening lately. I have maybe 50 PS2 games rite now, nothing expensive, just the normal popular titles and the major platformers and stuff, the good games I wanna play, but I'll scoop up just about anything, Idc.

Seriously tho, this much for a Godzilla game?? How? Its a Ps2 exclusive, but still. All I wanted to do was have a big battle with some kaiju with my friends.

I was recently in a game store that had over 500 PS2 games on a big shelf, bookcase style with their end labels visible.

I looked through every last game they had, and didn't buy anything. The PS2 has an absolutely incredible amount of shovelware. If one were to have a full set of every PS2 games, I wonder just what the prectange of the library would be shovelware garbage? I'll bet its at least 40%, might even be as high as 50%.

Now don't get me wrong - the PS2 was home to some truly excellent games, especially when it came to RPGs. but factor in the movie licenses, the budget tiles, the shovelware, the sports games, and the inferior versions of multiplatform games, and the PS2 library isn't nearly as impressive as you might think. This is true of the DS and Wii as well.

This may be true, but u also hafta realize the library is soo humongous. There's over 1600 PS2 games in existence. There really is a TREMENDOUS amount of amazing games on this system, when u really look at all the great games that r there. Aside from the RPGs, all genres really. I personally can't leave a retro game shop without picking up 1 or 2 PS2 games. When u compare the real amazing exclusives to what are on the Xbox and Gamecube, I really think the PS2 takes the cake.

Now you are correct about there being lotsa shovelware, and there is lots on the Wii also, but the PS2 I really think is balanced out by a huge amount of good games, too. I'm not interested in really going "complete" with the PS2, but I do collect PS2, mainly because I love to play them, and I just encounter game after game that's great. And the major franchises that are the best lotsa the time have like 3 or 4 games on the system.

I even have fun with some of the "shovelware" games too, like Peter Jackson's King Kong, my friend and I spent a whole evening playing this game, playing as King Kong and stuff. I really think this was the point where gaming had found a decent level of quality control, where even the mediocre games will at least be playable, ok games. I'm sure there are some shitty games out there, but I've found for the most part whatever you pick up will be, at the very least, playable.

In other words, lotsa hidden gems.

I don't understand what this has to do with the query of whether the Online Rarity Guide is being updated for PlayStation 2. Ok, PS2, the most popular system of it's generation and as of this posting of all time has with the good software a high quantity of bad/undesirable or shovelware-type software. The result? A colloquial "duh" echoes about.

This is true of any market leading system and yes, the DS and Wii were they're respective market leaders. So was NES, PS1, and 2600. This entire statement can be applied to any popular system. BEHOLD!

Now don't get me wrong - the SNES was home to some truly excellent games, especially when it came to RPGs. but factor in the movie licenses, the budget tiles, the shovelware, the sports games, and the inferior versions of multiplatform games, and the SNES library isn't nearly as impressive as you might think. This is true of the PS1 and Game Boy as well.

Another valid looking iteration. With the good comes the bad and when there's a lot more to go around the effect is amplified. During PS2s prime I got most of the games I was really interested in, many of which can be considered good, at the time. I cannot definitely speak for others but I suspect many acted the same and so when all was said and done after nearly 8 years in the market (duration I spent buying newly/upcoming PS2 software) there wasn't much left to choose from. I don't know the ratio of good/bad on PS2 or any system but it is an interesting question. In conclusion, like other older systems I am still able to find PS2 games I didn't initially get and am curious towards and see many others that I have no interest in getting.

Abridged version: don't talk crap about PS2 (don't give me no DRE bs either)

As for the topic at hand, the Online Rarity Guide relies on community management and I don't see updates coming in given the size of the database and the drop off in DP activity.

Someone should figure out a way to make a program to find out how many times a year a particular game shows up on ebay or amazon a year for any price and count the multiple listings as a separate instance. That could help determine rarity at least a little not counting wild copies. Games that get listed 50-100 times in a month period are probably dirt common and games that pop up only once or twice out of the year are rare. The same rule could work for Complete/CIB copies.

I've been the PS2 "guy" (and PS3 and PSP) since they were added to the database. I have my editable files still, and they've not been updated by me since 2009/2010 - which is when I stopped visiting here often and the overall focus had shifted away from the online guide.

If there was a way to automate adding the files back into the database, I'd enjoy picking it all back up.

Probably because of the Godzilla movie coming out in theaters.

It's like when Michael Jackson died. The Genesis version of Moonwalker skyrocketed in price, after he died. You could get that game for a decent price before that.
