I don't understand the whole attraction to this game or how the hell it became a best-seller. Seems certainly like a product of its time, as there are plenty of Greatest Hits titles that fall into this rut.

I hear the shining point was the co-op, but some things stand in the way: I'm not a big fan of either X-Men or beat-em-ups, the RPG aspect is more appealing but not that intuitive. The combat is kind of dull. I want to know what it is I'm missing out on.

The combat starts out really bland but it get's better as you level up. There is no point in playing, if you are playing by yourself. The co-op is extremely fun. Especially if you play with fans of the X-men series.

I had this game for the Nokia N-Gage, and thought it was ok. Nothing that was so great.

For the console version, the main appeal is that if you're an X-Men fan, it gives a more in depth look into the characters' lives and abilities than any previous X-Men game did, and lets you play as more of the good guys than ever before. If you had favorite characters you could make sure those were kept in your team as soon as possible. If you liked Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance and were a fan of X-Men, you just couldn't pass it, its sequel and Marvel Ultimate Alliance up.

I looked back at the last action game I played in the X-Men series: X-Men 2: Clone Wars for the Genesis and then looked at this, and this was quite a step up in the action and character selection. Plus it had RPG elements as a plus.
