I am trying to get a friend's NES working and having very little luck. When I first got it I couldn't get anything but a blinking blue(I think blue) screen. I cleaned the system as best I could and disabled the NES 10 and no change. I then swapped out the 72 pin connector and now I can get a game to show but it just keeps blinking. What do I try next?

I hate to say it but something more advanced with the system could be spent. You kind of removed my list of things to try other than 'aggressively clean each game' because you got a new connector(as long as you're sure it's good), tore the system down, and even clipped the lockout chip.

I had similar troubles with my current NES from time to time, where (even with a new-ish connector) I got nothing but the blinks. What fixed i for me was opening it up, removing and re-setting the 72-pin connector, making sure it's fitting the NES motherboard as snug, secure, and proper as can be. Unfortunately I tightened the screws too tightly, because while the games by and large now play flawlessly, they either only work without being pressed down, or I have to improvise a wedge of sorts to get the cartridge to stay down (the screws being too tight removes the ability for the games to "click" down and stay put).

TL;DR: Make sure the connector is set tight, and screw tight, but not TOO tight. Good luck!

What do you mean, blinks? Like the power button goes off, then back on? If so, sounds like you didn't disable the nes10 correctly.

turns out I didn't disable the nes-10 but almost disable another chip. I disabled the nes-10 properly and it worked first try.

thanks everyone
