I've recently been going through a ton of old GCN games that I have, as well as picking up a few titles that I missed out on. Seems like gamecube prices are really nice right now. Anyways, I picked up Geist and just started playing it, and have been pretty impressed. It's such a unique title. Incorporating elements from a game like The Haunting Starring Polterguy, but much more as well. Was just wondering what the general opinion of this game is around here. Do you guys think it hasn't aged well? Or the controls or just too sluggish? Or do you view it as a GCN gem? Or just indifferent? I'm loving it so far.

GCN = Gamecube and they(Nintendo) put that one out there. Never made much sense since DOL-XXXX (Dolphin) was the code name for their parts.

I have no thoughts on Geist as I got scared off it years ago when it was new because of mixed reviews, it looked promising but the complaints seemed valid since many places whined about the same stuff so it didn't seem like some snooty reviewer or paid slam type stuff. You are right though, most GC games are pretty cheap, definitely in comparison to the pounding the better Nintendo cart based system stuff gets hit with (especially the SNES.) It seems to as of yet still dodged the bullet but the games are going up, just almost all have not breached their original retail but a few have like Pokemon Box, Cubivore, Gotcha Force and a few others. It would be a good time to buy on that system since you don't take a beating on it much. I've held onto some nice games for that system between Cubivore, Skies of Arcadia, Tales of Symphonia, MGS Twin Snakes, Eternal Darkness, Ikaruga, and various others, plus I got a few fine imports as well.

I've only ever put in a couple minutes of gameplay myself since I'm usually so busy with other games. But it is on my to-try list as I do own a copy. It's just that games like that came out late and few payed attention, so unless it was spectacular like Resident Evil 4, nobody would have ever noticed it.

That refers to "GameCube Nintendo". It was what Nintendo themselves referred to the GameCube as for some reason. Get out a GameCube game's players guide? GCN will be everywhere. Nintendo Power? Same thing. Any online official materials? GCN. Just think of it as a very Nintendo decision, what with the idiotic names "Wii" and "Wii U" to follow it.

Nintendo hardware always carries the name of the prototype hardware, all the way back to the original Famicom with it's HVC-XXX code. HVC was "Home Video Computer" which became "Family Computer", commonly shortened to "Famicom" because the Japanese are extraordinarily lazy and shorten foreign words for stuff all the time. In fact, it's actually kind of funny. Here's a few examples that I've noticed. If anyone has more, please, feel free to add them in.

Family Computer: Famicom
Super Famicom: Su-Fami
PlayStation 2: PlayStay-two or PlayStay-Ni
Xbox: X-bo

You should definitely give it a go. The multiplayer is quite fun and the story seems interesting. The game is definitely cheesey in some aspects, but its genuinely unique as well. I'm enjoying it so far. Even despite the lack luster gun combat. The gun combat plays like an N64 shooter, but I love the N64!

Edit: That's probably why I like it so much, because it reminds me of Space Station Silicon Valley. As well as Haunting Starring Polterguy.

Eh maybe, it's cheap. I can't say I'd do it in the next 30 days though. I've got enough on my plate as I just got a stellar deal both on a new PS3 and a trio of games for it locally which I'll start messing with hopefully Wednesday night after it arrives. I think I'll be tied up in that for a bit.

I picked this one up at GS back in 2008 when they had a 35% off sale, but didn't get around to trying it until 2011. I recall it being short, having a good storyline and being very accessible. I'm open to playing just about anything yet it's only one of two FPS'S I've actually finished (the other being the excellent 007: The World is Not Enough for the N64).

GCN makes sense since all of Nintendo's console abbreviations that saw common use incorporated a N for Nintendo and since NGC was already in-use and associated by a fair number of folks with SNK's handheld that came out just a few years earlier.

I picked this up when it was still relatively new, but sadly, haven't returned after trying it out briefly. It remains part of my very large backlog. Discounting the Metroid Prime titles, it's my only GCN fps I believe (At least until I get around to buying and checking out Timesplitters one of these days).

Being a Nintendo exclusive in this genre made it stick out back then as did the concept of possessing something else to accomplish various tasks (Hopefully didn't just confuse this with a different game).

NGC? What was that? "Neo-Geo Color"? I read Pocket Gamer and other magazines at the time, and I never heard anyone abbreviate it like that. It was always either NGPC or occasionally, simply NGP. NGP and NGC are similar, but aren't the same, especially since SNK abbreviated the Neo-Geo Pocket Color as NGPC, not NGP. Color was an important word for marketing since the GameBoy Color did the same thing.

But even if there was some logically reason why they didn't call it NGC, it would have been fine I think if they called it "N GC" (with a space) or just what most non-Nintendo brainwashed people called it, "GC".

GCN was kinda the stupidest name for it.

I recall someone saying a long time ago that it was because National Geographic had it trademarked in regards to National Geographic Channel.

Also, what made me steer clear of Geist was the developer's track record:

TigerShark
Bug Riders: The Race of Kings
Duke Nukem: Time to Kill
Rugrats: Search for Reptar
Rugrats: Studio Tour
Die Hard Trilogy 2: Viva Las Vegas
Danger Girl
Duke Nukem: Land of the Babes
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Magical Mystery Mall
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Crush Course
Mary-Kate and Ashley: Sweet 16 – Licensed to Drive
GoldenEye: Rogue Agent (DS port)
Geist

Took a good look at that and went, "Nope!"

You're right, it was always NGPC. Not sure why I thought that last night. :)

That's too bad, you're missing out.
