Ehh, he just played it a lot. Back in the day when it was new my brother bought it and I could pop this game without taking a hit after not too long. I can't do it anymore, not even close and I don't even like playing it now because of all the arguments against it with backgrounds that look like they won't kill you but do, too many hits to take down targets, etc.
NES games did look awful most of the time, especially the main sprite.

Its a hard game, with enough practice anything is possible.

Depends on the games. Plenty of em looked great. I prefer 8bit Mario graphics to 16bit mario, and I prefer 8bit Mega Man graphics to Mega Man X.

It's really not that amazing. It's just memorizing where everything is going to spawn along with the layout of each level, then making sure you're already shooting where shit is about to be while also dodging the world. It's hard, but it's not impossible.
