So I've been playing some Virtua Fighter 4 lately, and I've concluded that I prefer VF's more realistic videogame martial arts unrealism to the Capcom style of "input a button sequence and shoot fire out your ass". But everybody has their own cup of tea. What's yours?

You should add a "I hate/am no good at fighters" button. Then I will vote. :D

Done. And I've pointed out previously that I'm really new to fighting games myself this year. That is, aside from having dumped a few bucks into the Mortal Kombat machine at the Barking Spider a few years ago, learning three of Rayden's special moves.
So it's really never too late to start.
Also, I should add that I started out with Virtua Fighter 2 for the Saturn, but the lure of modern graphics is very strong (and there was no way my wife was going to play VF2).

I have to go with Samurai Shodown even though I've only played the first game. The use of weapons really set it apart from Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat for me.

Nightwarriors for me! It's the most beautifully designed fighting game Capcom's ever made, with spectacular graphics and sound and a selection of instantly likable characters. There's not a dud among them, except possibly the overpowered bosses.

King of Fighters, of course. King is in it. In fact, she's probably most attractive in KoF '99 and 2000, which are the two I play the most. However i need to import the 2k2 Dreamcast version so that I might play that game... with King.
Seriously though, KoF '94 was the only fighting game in any arcade near me for the longest time. Then '95, '96... as the guy kept upgrading. So I literally grew up with the series.

Fatal Fury. Between Mark of the Wolves and Fatal Fury Special, I'm a happy lad.

Whoa, doesn't the Tekken series at least deserve an option?! IMO this is one of the most popular fighting games in North America (and mine personally).

Where are "Rise of the Robots" and "Rise 2 Resurrection"? Surely the greatest series in the history of fighting games. Only "Shadow: War of Succession" would be greater, if not for the fact that it was somehow overlooked during its days at the top of the 3DO charts and therefore held to but a single, flawless release.

You forgot Guilty Gear! They're not my personal favorites, despite being quite good, but they are fan-favorites.

Yeah, I should have remembered Tekken and Guilty Gear. But then, didn't I say I was new to this fighting thing? :-D :embarrassed:
Thanks for the reminders!

Well, I started out on Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II, but kind of moved past those in the recent year. While the series I'm "best" at is still MK, the King of Fighters games pretty much do it for me now. Tasty, tasty stuff. Actually requires a little skill beyond simple button mashing. The Last Blade is good stuff, too. Beautiful and delicious.

I vote Marvel vs. series because my best memory of prom night involves the arcade version of Marvel Superheroes...don't ask.
That also includes X-Men: Children of the Atom and Marvel vs. Capcom 2, but I'm starting to warm up to Capcom vs. SNK Pro and Guilty Gear Advance.

I prefer 2D fighters to 3D fighters by far.
Favorite series is Samurai Shodown and Street Fighter.
I also love MK2 (I have the dedicated cab), but the rest of the series is just average.
Also, button mashing will get you no where against good opposition in 2D fighters. Yes, even in MvC2.

I'm a very casual fan of fighters so the easier they are to pick up, the better. This is probably why my favourites are Soul Caliber and DOA2 on DC.
I might give VF4 Evo a whirl at some point though - I crave a realistic fighter. Are there any others that are realistic in terms of physical capabilities and gravity and all that?

I assume that your button mashing statement is directed in my direction. Well, I don't disagree. One of my wife's old friends came in from out of town, and we sat down with some SF Alpha 2. As I discovered, he was quite skilled with Chun Li, and no amount of button mashing could overcome him. Or her. Whatever.
Do guys (other than AdamG) generally pick male characters, and women female characters? Or is it the other way around, or is there no trend at all? I mean, it seems like the stereotypical fighting game has slow, powerful male fighters and fast, weaker female fighters. I've never seen a female Astaroth.
So if you prefer one style over the other, I guess your choice is generally made for you. I guess what I'm wondering is whether people get hung-up over crossing the gender line in fighting games. Not me--Sarah Bryant! Yahoo!

Slow, powerful female fighting game characters exist. Makoto in Street Fighter 3, or Hibiki in Capcom vs SNK 2, are good examples.

Mary Ivonskaya from the Tobal series is an even better example. She's 6'2", weighs 300 pounds, and plays like Zangief.
And, as someone at this forum (http://www.gametalk.com/talk/psx/tobal_2/52070013.htm) put it, "Mary Ivonskaya is the strongesr and beautyfull woman of the world!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Other = Last Blade/Last Blade 2
I'm not real good at most fighting games and LB is no exception but I really like the art direction and weapon combat all set in what appears to be the 18th or 19th century.

I can't vote. All SNK and Capcom fighters are awesome, even the shitty ones. Guilty Gear owns. I could take or leave Mortal Kombat and Virtua fighter. Soul Caliber is king as far as 3D goes. I can't believe you didn't put Birch Battler: Cease Fire on there.

Soul Calibur is my favorite fighting game ever, because of the out of the ring format where you get an automatic win if you knock your opponent out of the ring & I've done it many times myself.
The fastest time I knock an opponent out of the ring is 4 seconds.

I am a fan of the Dead or Alive series--which includes DOAXBV--I prefer the fluid movements of the characters and the moving backgrounds...and yes, please insert the obligatory boob-bounce joke here. I generally use the female characters in any fighting game I play because they usually have a few tricks up thier sleeves.
From the fighting games I've played, I use the following charactrs:
Dead or Alive Series: Kasumi/Hitomi
Killer Instinct Gold: Kim Wu
Samurai Showdown: Nakaruru
Mortal Kombat: Sonya Blade
Soul Calibur: Sueng Mina/Xianchua
Soul Edge: Sueng Mina
Street Fighter II: Chun Li
Bloody Roar: Alice
Street Fighter Alpha 2: Sakura
Eternal Champions-Challenge from the Darkside: Riptide
Virtual On: Fei-Yen
Pretty Fighter...they're all female...and the game is in Japanese...
Pretty Soliders Sailormoon Super S: Saturn--yes, using the glaive is kind of a cheap move...

um, don't quite a few other games have the "ring out" thing. Virtua Fighter?
Anyway, I'm not really a big fan of fighters. Have played quite a few a lot though. And no, I don't like there is any problem crossing the "gender divide" and people play all sorts of characters. Actually, on DOA3 I hardly ever play as the guys, just too slow for my liking.

Tekken is my favorite. Virtua Fighter is great, but I dont have the patience to learn how to play it at a professional level.
Soul Calibur for me. Only because I didn't see Barbarian for the Amiga on the list. Those Atari 2600 style fighters in full 16 colors rocked the house!
I voted Soul Calibur... but it's not really a series... there's only 2 games.
Your forgeting Soul Blade for the PSX.
As for my fav series, do you have to ask. Go Iori GIF!

what about bushido blade? does anyone know exactly why the gundude from it became a crossdresser? i kept losing the data to the games and/or getting pissed at slash mode and stupidly selling the game for jackshit (never managed to unlock him in the first game).
