The movement targeting women in the video games industry tried to pass itself off as a backlash against supposed corruption after a man falsely accused his developer ex-girlfriend of sleeping with a journalist for positive coverage (it's worth noting that the journalist in question never covered her work once they began a relationship). Somehow this spun out of control and Firefly actor Adam Baldwin crudely coined the term Gamergate because that's how scandals (or supposed scandals) are named these days (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vB9JgxhXW5w).
Gamergate spread so much that Feminist Frequency founder Anita Sarkeesian had to flee her home and cancel a scheduled talk at Utah State University upon receiving death threats (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-10-15-anita-sarkeesian-cancels-university-speech-following-school-shooting-threat) - at least one of which was specifically linked to Gamergate (https://twitter.com/femfreq/status/522218152071925760). The Utah State police decided that it couldn't not allow people to bring guns to a university. You know, second amendment and all that.
