3ds skylanders portal usb port what used for?

I was helping out a customer today and we were wondering about the new skylanders trap what ever on 3ds and we popped it open to check it out and noticed that there's a mini usb port on the side of the portal but nothing in the instructions told us what it was used for.

Any ideas?
