View Full Version : Games That Are Worse Than E.T. (Atari 2600)

So I'm tired of hearing the media and people who never played it call E.T. for the 2600 the worst game of all time. It's no gem, but I can enjoy it and I have definitely played worse. For instance, I'd rather play E.T. than Urban Champion on the NES.
What games would you consider worse than E.T.? (Games can be for any system)
Or do you think it is the worse game of all time?

Quite a few games are worse than E.T. I'll mention NFL Football for the NES.

10 Yard Fight is not only the worst football game on the NES or the worst football game on any system, it is literally the the worst piece of crap video game ever made on any system.

Karate. If you spent money on this abomination you have my sympathies. Those poor souls who bought this crap game should have filed a class action lawsuit for deceptive marketing. What jury after playing this POS could not side with them??? Ultravision actually tried to market this game as an arcade quality video game. They also boasted about their consumer satisfaction guarantee. Well how about a refund Ultravision/Froggo??? Check out the advertisements:

E.T. isn't even close to being the worst 2600 game, let alone the worst game of all time. I'd easily rather play E.T. than about 25% of the rest of the library.
How about Ridge Racer DS? What was otherwise a perfect conversion of a favorite Nintendo 64 game and the high point of the Ridge Racer franchise, was absolutely destroyed by the lack of an analog stick on the hardware itself. The game is simply uncontrollable using the d-pad or the touch screen.
I wish I had that $20 or so back.

I'm actually glad that James Rolfe said it wasn't the worst game ever in his review of it. You just have to know how to play it, which most people don't bother to learn. Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde, for example, is far more broken.
Since so many take his word as the gospel, I think the hate for this game will die down some.

Most of the early, "numbered" early VCS games.

The only thing worse than ET for Atari is a copy of ET for Atari that has spent the last 30+ years buried in a dump.

Been trying to tell my friend the Return of the Joker (NES) review is pretty exaggerated. But he is unconvinced. :(
That part in the third level he has trouble at is pretty far from the worst part in the stage (he didn't even mention the moving spike ceiling section. I recall one jump had pretty tight timing to cross a pit without hitting the spiky ceiling. Not to mention he left out the CHARGE SHOT feature, which is how you're supposed to deal with those "unfair" enemies), let alone the game (I couldn't beat the Joker, probably because I'm impatient, but I recall that level was pretty tough).

Whoa here we go. Here's my worst NES games rite now, and I'd rather play ET then these. Xenophobe, Videomation (even worse possibly then Color A Dinosaur), Bill Elliot's NASCAR. Theres more, but these come to mind. NASCAR isn't TOO terrible, but it's probably even worse then the Days of Thunder game.
I'd rather play E.T. then Raiders of the Lost Arc. Also, Pac-Man on Atari is quite playable. Its not awesome, Ms. Pac-man was better, and there are better ports of Pac-man, for sure, but it's quite a playable Atari 2600 game. The only issue, I find, is the graphics are disappointing.

Uugh! Raiders of the Lost Ark. I can't understand why they made this game so confusing. I so wanted to like this game, I mean its Indiana Jones, but it's just to cryptic for me.

New rule: anybody that says ET is the worst video game ever has to play Fun With Numbers for the next 2 hours.

I guess the reason ET for Atari is a bad game is because its just boring. I agree its not the worst game ever made, but it might be the most notorious bad game. I would just lump ET together with alot of other Atari 2600 games that I have no desire to play. There are worse 2600 game for sure.
That being said, if I had had an atari and ET when I was a little kid, I probably would have played it and enjoyed it.

Wasn't Fun With Numbers used at Gitmo as enhanced interrogation? ;)
My favorite Fun With Numbers review was from VIDEO_GAMER324 on GameFAQs ,"I see the Numbers, but I’m still looking for the Fun."

As it's been said, ET is far from the worst game ever. A few of the ones I hate way more are Troy Aikman Football and Checkered Flag Racing on Jaguar, Strawberry Shortcake on VCS, Army Rescue on Wii, Space Vultures on Emerson Arcadia, and Infiltrator on NES.

Race Drivin' on the Super Nintendo is the most recent one that stinks that I've played. It's a fine arcade game, but this conversion was an unplayable mess.
E.T. on a technical level is fine. That fact alone puts it above countless others. Heck, even if adventure games like this, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Riddle of the Sphinx aren't for you, modern VCS fans should at least be able to enjoy the title screen (Same with Raiders of the Lost Ark).

Good pick. I loves the 1st line of the review from Gamespot, "It serves no purpose other than to firmly establish the bottom of the barrel."

Another Good review was on Gamerevolution, "It's a bird! It's a plane! It's....CRAP!!!" LOL

What's truly insane about E.T. was that it actually sold over a million carts. :?

How about WWF Wrestlemania? I think it was the first WWF game on the NES. One of the worst games ever. Urban Champion was pretty shitty too.

Sonic '06.
ET was playable if you read the manual. Plus it didn't shit on the name of a video game franchise. I think people had really high expectations for it being based on an A-grade movie that when they got a C-minus game they were hugely disappointed.
Sonic '06 looked pretty, but in terms of actual gameplay was as bad as Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing. The conversation web and LOADING times. I would definitely call it the worst game of 2006, and say that most reviewers were extremely generous - Metacritic score was 46. My rag of choice at the time was Game Informer, who gave it a 6.75. Sonic '06 is literally as bad as Superman 64, and worse than Bubsy 3D. LJN never even made a game this bad. On a 0-100 scale, I would say this one deserves about a 20, 25 tops. GamesRadar called it the 43rd worst game of all time, which is probably accurate. The tediousness is what destroys it. I can deal with bad graphics and bugs, I enjoyed Driv3r (although it didn't age well). But Sonic '06 just isn't fun, not even a little bit. Most "bad" games are at least a little bit fun.

I was looking forward to this one for months, I was a 13 year old Sonic fan when it came out on November 14, 2006. My parents blew 60 bucks on it, I think it was launch day (or very shortly afterwards). This was the game I'd been talking about probably for 4 months or more. After playing it for 45 minutes, I couldn't get past Soleanna. I was thinking "what the fuck is this shit?" The hype for that game was huge.
