Flat Tube Light Gun Support List

Upon investigation I have found that there seems to be contradictory information regarding whether or not light guns work with flat tubes. To remedy this situation, and for our collective edification, I propose we create a list of flat tube SD CRTs and their results with light guns. The process shall be as follows:



Identify the make and model of your flat tube(s); this is usually located on the back
Conduct tests with all of your light guns. If your TV has an option for VSM, SVM, or any other such edge enhancement then conduct the test with this feature both on and off
Post results including the make an model of the TV, the effects of turning on and off VSM, and whether or not the console was directly connected to the TV. If you received a negative result and your console did not have a direct connection, then please remove any extraneous devices in the signal path (switch boxes, receivers, scalers, scan converters, etc.) and perform the test again.



I will periodically update this list with your results.

Sony KV-27FS13 (27" TV) I ran stock settings on it, Zapper and SMS Phaser both worked, never had a Sony, Saturn, or Dreamcast gun for it.

Your information is useful and has been recorded. Your set does have VSM (labled as "VM" in your menu) and is probably on by default, so I recorded it as not being affected by VSM. If this is incorrect please let me know. I should also point out that while VSM does make the image appear sharper, your picture will be far more accurate with it off.

Damn I forgot, it worked great with a Super Scope 6.

I kind of somehow forgot to mention that. I would never have bought it, but won a high score competition at a Captron in the mall back in the day with Gradius III and got awarded with a gift cert I used to get it. I put a bunch of hours on the thing too with it and never missed a shot. As I said I left the TV on defaults, it didn't need extra or removed features to look awesome. It's likely I could still have that TV today if not for the fact the circuit board controlling the on/off switch blew out and was more expensive to replace/repair than a new TV which sucked.

Sorry to hear about about your loss. If it wasn't in need of a custom IC, you probably could have just replaced the damaged componets yourself. Although, there is a chance your would have to remove the tube from the chassis in order to do so.

The data base can be huge and really not needed. Simply look at the specs of each Tube TV.

SD CRT 480i = All Retro Lightguns

ED CRT 480p = Only certain Lightguns that support 480p such as the Guncon 2

HD CRT 1080i = No Retro Lightguns

Another way is just look at all the video input connections at the back of the TV.

DVI or HDMI = HD CRT 1080i

Component and other Analog inputs only = ED CRT 480p or SD CRT 480i

I am inclined to agree with you; however, there are many who insist that flat tubes, SD or otherwise, will not work with light guns. I would like to bury the matter once and for all. I suspect that many who have actually had a problem were unknowingly using an ED set. Most people don't seem to even know that ED was a thing. Of course it is possible that I could be surprised and proven wrong.

This list is not going to work unless I have input from more than a few people. If you have a flat tube SDTV and at least one light gun, then I implore you to participate. If there are certain flat tube SDTVs that don't work with light guns, then it would be beneficial to the community to know which ones those are. If all flat tube SDTVs are light gun compatible, then there is a pervasive myth within the community that states otherwise and needs to be dispelled. This list would likely go a long way toward that goal. No matter what the list shows there will be a benefit to many within the community.

I don't have any flat screen CRTs so I can't test anything out myself, I just have standard older CRTs.

Sometimes light guns won't work on a set if the sharpness isn't turned high enough, or if other settings aren't set right. Just asking people here to see if light guns work or don't work on their set isn't conclusive enough unless you test all possible settings as well.

If anything, I would expect too high a sharpness setting to cause problems since it is a form of edge enhancement. It is improperly adjust brightness and contrast settings that can cause a problem.

This is a copy from my post in another thread. This is flat screen HD CRT with component in. I have tested it and it works with the Zapper. I can test the Sega Light Phaser later on as well as a blue third party PS1/Saturn gun.

For the sake of accuracy, I require a definite model number which should be located on the back. The model number you gave is not HD.
