I bought the Red Star on PS2 a few months ago. I'd remembered seeing previews but kinda forgot about it after it was initially cancelled. Anyway, looked it up on ebay and bought it, and it's quickly become one of my very favorite games on the system. The co-op is great fun, and the mixture of beat 'em up and top-down shooter speaks to my inner arcade rat and comic book fan. I ended up buying extra copies to give to three of my friends, and they all loved it, too.

Just curious if anyone here has spent time with it and dug on it like I have. I can't recommend the thing enough to arcade action fans.

Absolutely. It's one of the best kept secrets of the sixth generation, is the biggest casualty of Acclaim's demise. I guess we should count ourselves lucky Xs games rescued it from publisher purgatory, but it's too bad they only did so for the inferior PS2 version.

If you have a modded Xbox, I highly recommend you play the finished -but unreleased- superior Xbox version. That version runs in 480p, has better loading time, and runs in widescreen.

The Red Star is so damn good though, it's a perfect example of how much of a waste it is when a game is made and finished, yet isn't released because they can't find a publisher. Literally, it was three and half years from the time the PS2 build was finished to the time it was actually released.

I never did mod my Xbox, but it might be worth it to try that one at its best. I wish I had thought of it when they were sellingsigned copies online for $20.

I only briefly remember this game being mentioned by someone in another forum some years ago but I thought that it was cancelled. I didn't think that it was this sort of game at all though. It looks awesome.

One of the designers of this game is a host on the podcast "Chatterbox Video Game Radio Show".

They have a number of episodes where he talks about the design of the game. Probably worth listening to, if you really like the game. I'm not sure what episodes it would have been, they've been around a long time.

I bought this game for the PS2 years ago and (ducks for cover) returned it! I was disappointed there was not a twin stick mode shooting with one stick while running in another direction with the other stick. I should try again and pick it up.

EDIT
Oh why not, just bought a PS2 CIB online for !5.99 shipped.

Oh wow. When I saw this thread title my immediate thought was 'There is NO WAY there was a video game based on The Red Star comic book. That is silly.'

And low and behold it was EXACTLY THAT. Amazing.

Yes, it is exactly that, and it is awesome. The co-op is great, too, as the characters feel extremely different, and their abilities actually compliment each other pretty well, and it switches effortlessly between beat 'em up and bullet hell shooter in levels that reflect the game's story well and make sense. Christian Gossett was pretty involved, so it really feels like it's in the right universe.
