Been thinking about some of the strange levels I've played in different games, theres gotta be tons, thought I'd make a thread.

One weird one is the mini game in Kirby's Super Star where you have to collect all the treasure chests, it didn't seem to have a clear ending, I wound up hitting a dead end, wandered around aimlessly till I found a random door with a boss who was not hard, or felt like an "end boss," and there were 3 other identical doors to choose that I hadn't been in, but after I beat the boss, the game ended. It's a great crazy game, but god is it weird...

I always thought the dungeon inside the fish in Ocarina Of Time was bizarre too, lotsa crazy disorienting colors that are just totally confusing.

Try Monster Party on NES, it's not so much about weird levels, the whole game is just messed up weird.

Earthworm Jim had some odd levels.

"For Pete's Sake" - You must escort a puppy throughout the level, protecting him from enemies. If he takes damage, he goes into rage mode, chews you up, and spits you back a screen or so.

"Puppy Love" - Psy-Crow throws puppies out of a window and you must bounce them along to the other side using your marshmellow.

That level in Max Payne where you're following a trail of blood in pitch blackness while a baby's voice is heard crying in the background... one serious WTF moment in gaming!

Pretty much anything from the Katamari games.

Patapon 1 and 2 are fairly screwy too as far as bizarre factor goes. PSP had some amazing stuff that stuns me they let die with the system as it was just straight foolish. Loco Roco even more than Patapon lends itself perfectly to all the tablet and phones out there since it was just a twist mechanic game. I'd so buy those games again if it ended up on Android.

The ending for Psycho Fox on the SMS: DOSUCOI!

Apparently, DOSUCOI is some sort of sumo cheer. Anyway, I thought a sumo fox fit the bill for this thread.

The ending of Ghostbusters for the Famicom: "riri".
Though someone recently got a prototype version that is COMPLETELY blank.
... so there was a bug in the prototype (supposedly it loads the wrong ROM bank, so the font is missing but the English text is there) and they didn't bother to fix it before releasing? Amazingly bad. :P

Good one. Very weird ending. What does "riri" even mean?

It's probably just glitch data. The ending is supposed to show the English text (but I think with like one, maybe two mistakes they bothered to correct in the NES version) and credits but because the incorrect tileset is loaded, the font is invisible.

I do think Kirby Super Star is the strangest Kirby game that I've played, at least. They just took tons of risks making it and it works perfectly. The level I mentioned where you're hunting for treasure chests has one boss battle which is a parody on turn-based RPG battles, it's pretty insane. And it's what really turned me on to how amazing 16-bit graphics can be. I'd played plenty of other 16 bit games obviously before this one, but in many cases, like with Mega Man, I usually preferred the 8-bit games, perhaps because of the charm they have, the simple limited graphics and music, that there's not as much of in the 16-bit gen, but Kirby Super Star showed me how gorgeous these games can look. The Sonic games have always looked wonderful though, imo.

When I find bad 16-bit games though, to me they are just horrible. At least with the NES, the games feel a little novel and at least are kinda neat to give 5 minutes of my life to, but an awful game like Toys on Sega Genesis? Ohhh god. It's horrible, I hate it, and it doesn't even have that novel, humorous appeal that a bad NES game has.

Roughly 60% of Saints Row IV has to qualify here. Quite a fair bit of Saints Row 3 as well, come to think of it.

Weird game? Let's not forget Kiki Trick for the Nintendo Wii. [ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZq1xFFoazw ]

Weird level in an otherwise seemingly normal game? I'd have to nominate the last level/boss fight in the original Half Life, where you fight...

a huge alien overlord which appears to be a gigantic human baby where you have to use... um... "biological trampolines" to catapult yourself into the baby's closing and re-opening cranium to blast its brains apart with a rocket launcher before the baby evacuates you; repeat over and over again until it's dead.
