I've been trying to get into this one for a while and have restarted the Chapa story like three or four times, but never manage to figure out the best strategies for effective battles. I really don't understand the combat system. Apparently HP is simply a way of keeping your LP points from being lowered during an attack, but even then isn't wholly effective? I'm confused. I also seem to be doing a lot of damage to enemies with no real gain. Would like an explanation. The manual remains kind of vague on the whole subject, too.

It uses the LP concept of SaGa Frontier 2, except enemies have LP also. HP no longer matters, it's all about LP. When damaging enemies HP, all that happens is you have a higher chance of damaging their LP. If you damage their LP, whether it's the first hit or the 100th, they're dead.

In order to increase stats, you have to equip more powerful skills which you acquire at the end of each quest you take from the inn.

I overrated the hell out of this game when I reviewed it on Gamefaqs when I did a short review because I liked a lot of things about the game but it has a couple major flaws that I gave a pass. The whole board game thing seemed really stupid until I actually played it, it was actually a unique aspect about the game that I really liked. If they removed the reel system and made skills a bit easier to learn so you could actually progess easier the game would have been really good. I'd have considered it just as good as both SaGa Frontier games. Instead, the game is nothing more than a mash up of both good and bad ideas. It can be playable, but not necessarily good.
