SNES without Power Jack safe to use?

So I've had a SNES without the proper AC power jack for several years (just two prongs for the power cord to connect to), and despite that it still works great. However, I recently heard on an episode of Pat the NES Punk's Completely Unnecessary Podcast that using a SNES with that issue is a fire hazard. I love me some super nintendo, but I don't want to burn the house down over mario world. Is this true? If so, is there anything I can do to prevent such an occurrence short of buying a completely different system?

I'm not sure what your issue is. Are you using a non official AC adapter with your SNES? Is there a problem with the power supply port on the back of your SNES?

My AC adapter is OEM, but the power jack on the system doesn't have the ring around it, just the two connector prongs that lie underneath.

It sounds like you cannot guarantee a tight fitting connection. Loose connections run the risk of arc faults; I would not operate it in that condition. Replace the weird jack with something easily obtainable and either put a compatible plug on the OEM adapter or replace the adapter with something that will fit your new jack.

I was just moving my SNES and part of the plastic on the ac jack broke off! It looks like it split in half, maybe I can glue it back on. Otherwise, looks like I'll have to learn how to solder.

The plastic ring in the center of the SNES power jack breaking off is actually a somewhat common issue with the original model of the console. Hyperkin makes a replacement rear panel that's fairly easy to install. I wouldn't consider myself anything more than a novice at soldering and I've managed to install a handful of them without much incident.

I've just been replacing them with Genesis 1 style connectors so I don't have to use the stupid SNES style plugs. Probably should do it to my Virtual Boy.
