Mass Effect - normal difficulty (XBOX360) 01/15

Bayonetta - normal difficulty (XBOX360) 03/02

Castlevania: The Lords of Shadow - Warrior difficulty (XBOX360) 04/20
The Last Of Us - normal difficulty (PS3) 04/29
God of War HD - normal difficulty (PS3) 5/25

So I'm one of the last adult gamers to play God of War, and while this game was probably as amazing a everyone thought when it was back when it was new, I was pretty let down by it. I thought that the enemies and character models were really unimpressive design wise save a few stand outs, but THE WORST offense were the requirement of several QTEs. I despise quick time events with a passion, and mandatory random ones are the absolute WORST. The final battle with Aries was one of the easiest AND most frustrating boss battles I've EVER experienced. The fighting was easy as sin, but the fucking required 2 sequence random QTE that gives you NO TIME to complete, AFTER an annoying tug-o-war of spamming the 'O' button repeatedly to random results (sometimes I win, other times I lose, and my button hammering speed never changes). Does ANYONE find that fun?

I'd never played any of the Uncharted games and didn't know what to expect. I can see why they're so popular, but honestly it was just sort of mediocre to me. They managed to stick those retarded ass QTEs I hate in there (is this a staple of modern games now?) and a few EXTREMELY shoe horned in motion controls with a few awful camera angles to boot, which made some of the platforming really tedious. I finished it in one sitting, too. I NEVER DO THAT. I can't think of the last game I've played a (non racing) game that I've never played before from beginning to end in one sitting. It probably haven't since the 16-bit days.

MY first Ys game and I really dig the bump-attack setup. I bought into the feel of the world and the quest to uncover the books. The birdo boss was frustrating, at least until I realized you needed to be level 10 to be able to damage him. The tower was kind of a pain; huge with many of the places barely distinguishable from each other, and directions not so clear. Still, I really like the game alot. Music was cool, though some notes grated on my ears, which I consider that more of an issue with the tech and not the compositions. Can't wait to play more Ys!

14) Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars(SMS)
My first Alex Kidd game. Not too impressive really, but it distracted me for about an hour or however long it took me to make it through the levels.
15) Raiden III(PS2)
Fun gameplay and sweet music here. I feel that the ship moves just a hair too slow, but otherwise it played very well to me. Graphics were very generic. Really like the powerups, except for accidentally changing weapons numerous time by grabbing the orbs right when they switch up.

I've been wanting to do this since 2013s topic, so I've now added links to all the 'Beaten in' topics going back as far as the search would find them to the first post. If someone other than me makes the next topic, I'll PM you the premade list and ask that it be added to the first post there.

Nice! Very cool to have that. I think I started posting in the 2012 "Beaten" topic, but I keep my list in a single Word doc. Still, very cool to have them all linked together like that.

Thanks! I had been wondering if that'd get added. I kinda wish I had participated every year, but I'm still half tempted to compile a list of everything I beat in the years I did participate.

Edit: Dang, I didn't start posting in these topics until 2011. That's even later than I thought. Skimming through the old topics is kinda depressing, haha. Not only did my total number of games beaten diminish each year, but so did the activity in these threads when the board as a whole began to lose activity and members.

Now if only someone could help me out with my laziness and compile a list of links to the old daily playing topics, haha. If I really had nothing better to do, I could dig through those and compile lists of what I beat in the years prior to 2011, since I was participating in those topics long before the "Beaten in" topics.

I do that. I keep a notepad document version of the list so I don't have to hunt the forums (and there are other forums with yearly beat topics that I participate in).

Doing a search for "daily" and "daily check" only showed this years. Either the other years didn't have one or they are under different titles.

Thanks once more! Hmm, I think that might be all of them. It wasn't a yearly thing for a long time, so that 2003 topic ran clear to 2011 until it was closed and then it was a new topic for each year like the "Beaten in" topics. The 2003 topic was here in the Classing Gaming section, but everybody posted about all kinds of games, both old and new. Then that 2005 topic was in the Modern Gaming section, in an attempt to split the discussion into classic/modern (but it never really worked and the discussion of modern games in the original topic still continued, haha). And then there was the 2004 topic for PC gaming, as you labeled.

Man, it'd be a pain, but I really want to dig through those topics. A lot of people would just list off games, but I'd usually write about where I was in the game and my impressions and such. In a way, it's almost like I kept a gaming journal for a great number of years.

Leo_A

Can't all those topics be merged together? I think that would be preferable.

I've now finished Super Mario 3D World, minus replaying it for the four character specific stamps that require me to replay the entire game four more times. I'll do that someday, but I stuck with Mario for my first play through, only switching when I had to in order to activate a character specific switch.

I think my tally for 2015 is as follows...

-Command & Conquer (PC; NOD and GDI campaigns along with all special missions)
-Command & Conquer: Red Alert (PC; Allied and Soviet campaigns)
-Super Mario Bros. (NES version; Both quests)
-Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japanese Famicom version; Just worlds 1-9 as Mario, but I'm in the process of replaying as Luigi and working towards accessing worlds A-D)
-Super Mario Bros. 2 (USA NES version; Played as Princess Toadstool)
-Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES version)
-Super Mario 3D World

I see a theme...

The 2003 topic was here in the Classing Gaming section, but everybody posted about all kinds of games, both old and new.

Same with the Beaten topics. Someone complained a year or three about posting about beating modern games on the classic board topic, but we've been pretty open about any beats are fine. It's in classic because it's assumed several of the games listed will be classic, this being DP and all.

Can't all those topics be merged together? I think that would be preferable.

To be honest, I don't think it would matter either way. A decade long mega thread doesn't strike me as any better or worse than just having a thread locked to each year.

Aussie2B
06-06-2015, 03:33 AM
Actually daily playing went yearly precisely because the mega-thread that went on for several years became a problem. It got so large and unwieldy that the forum could barely support it back then. For a long while there, it was difficult to get it to even load up, let alone get a post to go through. That's why it ultimately got locked and we were told to do yearly threads.

So, looks neat, sounds neat, plays like ass. Another game that is just infuriating to play because the Vita is just not a responsive system and I'm willing to give the game a break for the failings of the system, but it really seems like the developers should have been aware of it's limitations. Also, save glitch. About mid-game, the Vita starts spitting out "can't save, sorry" errors back to back and I've read that it can cause system crashes as well. In the state it's in, I can't recommend buying. If you got it free via PSN+ (or other promotion) as I did, it's worth looking at.

Over the weekend, I finally beat a game I've had for years: Hissatsu! On Sega Saturn.

Previously, I could never get past level 4. Somehow, I was able to finally get past level 4, and then go on to complete level 5, which is the last level of the game. I really thought that this was a game I would never finish. My perserverence paid off, lol.

Well, after wanting to play Ys for over 20 years, I've now played/finished 4 of them in the last 2 months. Books I&II on Turbo CD is definitely my favorite so far. The voice acting in I&II was top-notch, especially for the time. I love the bump-attack mechanic. A bit too maze-happy at times, but what a great adventure. And damn that music rocks.

III was also a lot of fun, just not on the level of I&II. I'd have preferred if it stayed with the top-down bump-attack style of I&II, but the sidescrolling traditional attack button setup works well. Another cool adventure, with a big step down in the voice acting. Great music in this one as well.

Yeah man, it really was worth the wait(and the money). The difficulty progression reminded me a lot of Blazing Lazers, except that, unlike Blazing, didn't require near-perfect execution on the final stage. With Gate of Thunder it was more difficult at the beginning, but then smoothly progressed as you could feel yourself getting better at the game. It's about as perfectly balanced a challenge as I've encountered in shooter/shmup.

AKA the Japanese version of Bonk's Adventure for Game Boy. I was in the mood to play something on my GBA SP (maybe because I was sick recently and didn't pull it out, even though I usually do when I catch a cold), and this was one of the very few original GB or GBC games I own that I still hadn't beaten (because it's one of my more recent acquisitions). It was a real quick play. I'd given the game a brief try in the past, going through a couple stages, but this was the first time I sat down with the intention to play it seriously and I beat it in the same sitting. Got all the way up to the final boss without ever getting a Game Over, although I did continue a couple times on him. I dunno if the game gives unlimited continues or if I just didn't need however many it offers. Even though it was pretty easy and quite similar to the TG-16 game of the same name, it was still good fun.

For whatever strange reason, I got a craving to play some Game Gear, even though I've barely touched the thing in a decade. Basically the only time I ever put any significant time into it was when I first bought it and played through Shining Force, and I've barely acquired any additional games for it past that original batch that came with the system in the eBay lot that I picked up. Seems like my speaker broke yet again (a wire snapped when I opened it for cleaning when I first got it, but that was fixed with a quick solder job), but I still get sound just fine through the headphone jack. It's not in the greatest shape in general, as the screen is covered in scratches and the buttons are kinda chewed up, but it's nothing terribly noticeable while playing. I figured Aladdin wouldn't be too long or difficult, and just as I expected, I both started it tonight and had it beat tonight. Nothing that great, but still surprisingly decent. Certainly better than the Game Boy Aladdin. I was also surprised to see that it was developed in Japan. I had always assumed that the only Japanese Disney's Aladdin game was Capcom's SNES release.

2. Super Mario Bros. - SNES (I snagged Super Mario All-Stars earlier this year, and for the love of God, I have redefined my own personal feelings of hatred for Hammer Bros.)
3. Dishonored - PC (I cannot believe I hadn't played it sooner. The Bethesda E3 trailer for Dishonored 2 prompted me to immediately buy the prequel and play the hell out of it!)
4. Portal - PC (I never actually beat Portal on PC. I left it after a while because I got distracted.)
5. Portal 2 - PC (Same reason as above.)

As for what I am nearly finished beating, I have Batman Arkham Asylum neatly packaged and ready to finish up, along with Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels and the rest of the Arkham series (well, that which is still available on PC ;) ).

Otherwise... I really should get around to finishing Morrowind... Playing for years, and I still suck at it...

I beat two tough games this past weekend: Jurassic Park and Claymates. Was going to quit both of them halfway through but something compelled me forward and I ended up beating both.

JP is more of an endurance test because it's not THAT hard, but Claymates' African world is tough and so is the last stage with the space alien boss.

Whelp, there we have it, the worst TT LEGO game I've ever played. It wouldn't have been so bad if they hadn't tried to be the movie so hard. Instead of moving in that fluid way you see in most LEGO games, the characters all move like they did in the movie. It's slow, cumbersome and visually annoying. And speaking of annoying, the game plays clips from the movie before and after each level, meaning the PS4 pops up a message saying your streaming ability (regardless of if you had it on or not) has been suspended because they don't want you streaming parts of the movie. The levels are boring, the puzzles show none of the creativity I've come to expect, the OST consists of "Everything is Awesome" and then some stock flash-game tunes. TT has done vastly better, there is no excuse for this.

Been a while since I updated.
Vertical Force: fun enough and I have to admit that the depth gimmick was pretty cool.
Smash Bros For WiiU: I guess I have completed this now. Nothing left to unlock. Great game of course.
Splatoon: Super fun and fresh take on shooters. First time I felt compelled to go online with a shooter(or even play once) since Halo 3.
Raiden Trad: I had fun with this one. Nothing great, but good, simple shmup fun. Bonus points for having co-op!
Nemesis: Surprisingly good conversion of the franchise to the GB. A little challenging, but not too much.
Kirby's Adventure: Played this off n on for a while. Definitely one of the better looking and most impressive NES games.
Bust-A-Move Universe: Typical B-A-M goodness. Got it for like 5 bucks at Lamestop. Well worth the price and then some.
Little League Baseball: Amazingly similar to Baseball Stars(both are SNK games, so not that amazing I guess). Still the gameplay differentiates itself enough. I really like how it's a lower-scoring baseball game and not a slugfest every time out. The AI is quite competent and not easily fooled. Really an excellent 8bit baseball game.

Vertical Force has that Star Soldier feel with those interesting barrier sections to go over or under. It's one of my favorite VB games. Little League Baseball feels more like Neo Geo Baseball Stars in how it's lower scoring with more ground balls like you mentioned. I like it. Kirby's Adventure is one I played through recently again, and while I like it, I find that I have to play through it quickly or I get bored.

over the last 2 weeks I have beaten:
-Final Fantasy II (IV) hard-type. Excellent hack, its better than the original game since the original is so easy. With the hard-type hack there are a few battles that are more difficult but its not overly difficult.
-Super Valis IV. I beat the Famicom version on hard mode. The Japanese version has 3 settings: easy, normal and hard; while the US version has only normal and hard.. however hard mode on the Japanese version is actually easier than the Normal mode on the US version. So its actually like the US version has very hard & very very hard modes.

The Paladin enemies are tough, but you can cast toad on them and then step on them. Otherwise they are hard. Ocasionally you can run into those Alert-type monsters that call Paladins and you can kill them over and over and gain tons of levels.
The only fights that are really dificult are when you fight the 4 fiends inside the giant and the CPU (the giant ball) inside the giant. The CPU is by far the hardest fight in the game. Rosa learns a spell called 'rage' which berserks everyone in the party, I had to cast this to beat the CPU.

Prolly the most notable game on the 32x, it plays quite well for such a unique gameplay element, 2 characters attached by a rubber band thing. The levels look awesome but they're kinda confusing to navigate, but not that difficult, really. It's a great game though. Not the best in the classic Sonic series, but worth playing. A proper Sonic game, I think, woulda been better.

Not the only game I've beaten this year, but I did finally beat Windjammers on one credit on my MVS cabinet. That was pretty tough. Sometimes, when I'm way overly tired but can't sleep, I really ramp up in skill, which is what happened here. I don't know if it's just because some of the busier parts of the brain shut down and allow my hands to go on autopilot or what, but there's a sweet spot for me where around midnight if I haven't slept for a day or two everything just clicks, and I'm just better. Anyway, Windjammers rules.

Another one of those co-op games that are short and tell a small story. This one is pretty to look at, as a nice OST and a series of amazing documentary snippets about Iñupiaq culture. The game plays well enough, with a few areas where the controls are sluggish and the AI is particularly dumb at times. I enjoyed it enough that I just dropped $3 on the DLC levels.

It had been probably 25 years since I'd really played this one. Far easier to play as an adult with faqs/level select code to continue where you left off. I really like the story, cutscenes, and overall feel of the game. Some of the different modes can feel pretty restrictive and stiff, but that was mostly when it gets later in the game and the difficulty goes way up. Boy, what a pain in the ass this was to finish. I probably never would have finished it if it wasn't for the level select code; no way I'd start it over each time. But this feels like a game that should have a save/password feature, as some of the levels are pretty darn hard and confusing. Still, I did enjoy the game quite a bit and it's definitely a unique NES game with the adult story, cutscenes, and variety of gameplay.

Yes, Vertical Force is definitely one of the better VB games I have played. I'm such a sucker for shmups anyways. I haven't played Neo Geo Baseball stars before, perhaps someday. But Little League is definitely a new favorite NES sports game of mine. Kirby's Adventure I had to play in chunks, so I see what you mean about going through quickly. I really started getting into it more towards the end. The final battle was pretty darn cool!

Did Money Puzzle Exchanger for MVS on level 4 difficulty the other day. That was taxing. I don't know that I've played a puzzle game that frantic before. By the end, I swear, you have about 10 seconds to win the round or it's over. Still, I can't say I didn't have fun. Also cleared Nightmare in the Dark on level 4. Not too tough, and I liked the atmosphere... it was like Snow Bros had a baby with Ghosts n Goblins. Also, finished one credit runs on Wrestlefest (Royal Rumble and Main Event modes) on that PCB. Was using it to test out a new supergun build I did to test stuff for building my infant son a half-size arcade cabinet when he's a toddler. No 60 in 1 or moppet stuff... that boy's gonna run a JAMMA rig and play the good stuff. Cleared my new working US Championship V'ball PCB on default settings as well without losing, but not on one credit, because the time limit is harsh.

This is the longest of the three and probably the most interesting. Less fiddly than the second, more involved than the first. Worth playing for the over all story and came to a close that I think works fine, given the direction we've been heading. As a whole series, it's actually pretty frustrating, switching between decent and annoying at the load of a screen. I'm talked about this in the past, but the game was originally in German and was straight translated, not localized. So, there are many aspects that just don't land well in English (such as an insufferably egotistical main character, poking fun at the transgendered and selling a black chick into a slavery where she has to act like a monkey for money, to narrow it down to the major complaints).

Similar to Doodle God, another game I played years ago on Kongregate, another game people complain about because it doesn't have all the features that were added for the Android version. Don't contribute in here much, so I don't have a nice list like most of you (I'm jealous!). Don't finish many games, in fact. Anyway, I did finish one last night.

Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess.

Originally started it in 2013 but quit playing for some reason, at a point just before the sky city. Picked it back up a month or two ago. Usually I use multiple save files on games, but its Zelda, so not really necessary and I had been using a single file back in 2013, so I kept using the same one. First save I make is in the cannon room, which is one of two game-breaking bugs that won't allow you to continue. AAARRGH. I'd done it up to that point without any guides or looking anything up, but I didn't remember stuff after so long, so I just pulled up a guide and rushed through it back to where I was.

I don't know why it gave me so much trouble, but after being stuck on Nightmare forever, I finally beat Metroid Fusion.

28) Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World(Wii)

I had this for years and finally got the urge to play it. Unfortunately it did not live up to the experience of the original Symphonia for me. The gameplay was pretty fun, though there were some issues there. And the story had it's charms, but the details of the plot, wild assumptions that the characters make that they pass off as sensible, some bad music, and often painful dialogue really did bring down the experience. And Emil, the main character has got the be one of, if not THE most annoying and unlikable hero in just about any game I can think of. Still, there are good points to the game that I mentioned above, and at times the game can be really beautiful.

I finally beat Dark Forces for the PS1. I really enjoyed playing Dark Forces with my Nuby NB-711 Playstick although I still like the DOS version better.

Last night I beat Final Fantasy for NES using only a single white mage.
Took about 20-30 tries over 4 days to beat Chaos in the Temple of Fiends. Everything else about doing the solo quest isnt super challenging. The Ice Cave took a few tries, but to beat Chaos you have to get really lucky after going through the temple. Its difficult because you dont have the higher level white spells that the White Wizard can use, like exit, cure4 and fade.

28. Reversion - The Escape

Short, simple. Voice acting is horrible. Interesting enough that I'll play the second one whenever they get around to making it.

29. Dev Guy

Another short, simple game. Meant as commentary on indie devs. Worth a play for achievement hunters, can't recommend it past that.

30. Absent

A little fiddly, has some odd quarks and the voice recording could use some work. But still pretty good, considering it's a thrown together free game.

31. Silver Creek Falls - Chapter 1

Ehhhhhh. Just another RPG Maker horror game that over uses assets and leans heavily on the anticipation of a jumpscare to sell itself.

32. Port of Call

Short, predictable, not bad. Worth a look.

Hooray for NGPC love.

I did Adventure Time: Hey Ice King, Why'd You Take Our Garbage on 3DS aside from replaying some old games. It was entertaining enough although quite short and easy, like a dumbed down Zelda II with a great opening theme song. I liked it pretty well, though it only took a couple of hours.

Some more NGPC puzzle gaming for me. As far as I can tell, there is no credits scroll in Magical Drop Pocket, but I'm counting it as beaten. I cleared Story mode on every difficulty, even Super Hard, which got me diddly squat (since the unlockable characters can be acquired by beating Hard or Super Hard, and I cleared Hard first). I also saw every character ending. I didn't play Self-Challenge mode quite as extensively since I don't find it as fun, but as best as I can tell there, it just goes on forever on Medium and Hard (or maybe it stops at the highest rank, I dunno). I know it ends on Easy since eventually it tells you to play on Medium. Anyway, it's about time I put some real effort into this game considering what a pain in the ass it was to get a CIB US copy of it, haha. Easily the hardest in the US library for me to find.

Well, I finished all of the included levels and unlocked everything, I guess that counts.

30) Streets of Rage(SCD)
I recently got a SEGA CDX from craigslist and it came with one of the Sega multi-discs that has SoR on it. I've finished it a few times before, but wanted to test the CDX and of course chose SoR. Ended up playing it a few times because it's so darn fun.

31) Ys IV: Dawn of Ys(PCE-CD)
Was at times a little difficult to finish this using the only guide I could find online(from 2002). The guide was helpful, but kind of leaves you out in the cold in spots, especially puzzle/maze parts. Anyways, totally loved the game. Very colorful graphics and an epic adventure. Awesome music as always with Ys. Too bad this never had a proper English release.

32) Valis III(PCE-CD)
First Valis game I've put much time into. I enjoyed the game, but it's rep was true in that it has it's fair share of flaws. The fifth level, where you have to use a certain character's ice magic to freeze somewhat random enemies to cross about half the stage was total BS. The final boss was pretty frustrating, as it's next to impossible to beat him unless you are fully powered up and have magic(so if you die on your first life, best to restart the level). Also, 3 times I killed the boss only to be killed by him simultaneously/right after. THAT was frustrating. Anyways, it was a cool game that I nonetheless enjoyed. Once you get used to the somewhat stiff controls everything starts to flow rather well, aside from the archaic design choices here and there(STAGE 5!). Really love the aesthetic and music in the game.

14. Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - GameCube

This game was great, obviously, but still seemed to not meet the same level of greatness Ocarina of Time did. There's less temples and the difficulty is scaled down, and the ending isn't really as epic. My main complaint is that they make you re-fight 4 bosses from previous dungeons before moving on to fight Ganon. That to me just felt like a time filler that coulda had some really cool puzzles instead. I'm not always a fan of them doing that in games. Even in Mega Man I think it's a cheap way to add more content. I'd rather have something I haven't seen. But it's a ton of fun and the whole game looks gorgeous. The overworld is huge and I spent hours sailing around doing random stuff. None of the puzzles r that difficult, which can be ok if u suck at really cryptic parts like I do.
