View Full Version : Modern Games Which DON'T REQUIRE Upgrading/Leveling-Up To Progress

I'm an action gamer through-and-through, and while I do enjoy slower story-based games, I usually prefer to play skill-based, action-orientated games. With that said, too damn many "action" games today require leveling/upgrading to progress! For example: {kill thousands of enemies for EXP/gold, gain levels or exchange gold for better equipment, finally have enough points in your stats to get to the next story segment/area, repeat this cycle over again} is an exercise in menial work and irritation for me. I want to play and experience the best parts of the game, not slog through time-killing busy-work just so the reviewers can claim this game takes so-and-so many hours to complete. And, gaw! I'm so sick of games which go, "Woah, slow down there, partner. You don't have enough boondoggles to unlock the next stage/mode. We need you to repeat those earlier stages again to collect/find/earn more boondoggles before we'll let you continue to the later stages of the game." No, dammit, I finished those early stages. Let me go onto the next stages for crying out loud!

With that said, what are some modern single-player games (or multi-player games which feature a single-player campaign mode) which do let you just play from one stage to the next as long as you reach the end of the previous stage? I'd prefer something linear, but "fake open world" is good enough. I'm looking for fun, fast-paced action games without a lot of hand-holding, tutorials, text, or micro-management. Imagine something like the original Ninja Gaiden trilogy or early Super Mario Bros. games. I need recommendations for games on 3DS or PC... but keep in mind, new games for older consoles are acceptable too... I'm just saddened by all this RPG-style time-wasting happening in modern games! I know many consider video games as only a pastime or a "time waster," but I don't want to be bogged down in simple virtual chores with my limited playtime. I want my leisure hours to be filled with high-quality, challenging fun!

I often feel the same way, especially about JRPGS.

I have heard that Chrono Trigger is good about not wasting time. There are lots of other titles that don't require leveling. I suggest the site howlongtobeat.com for a sense of how padded out something would be.

When I get too antsy about moving quickly through a plot, I generally choose a book or a film instead of a game.
