a friend of mine and I are going to start playing monster hunter 3 and we wanted to be able to communicate online
I know MH3U uses the built in mic on the game pad but would a headset also work?
and if so does it just use a 4 conductor 3.5mm plug?

If I remember right that would be just fine. There is a normal jack on the controller and with the mic right there on the pad that should be alright. TurtleBeach did sell a version of their gamer headset with posable mic they also did for PS4 and that one works w/out mic on that jack or it can go into this little box that pops into a USB port on the system so you can do it all (plus independent volume, bass boost and on/off switch to the mic on the head set.) Last year best buy was overstocked on them and sold them all year long for like $20. I kind of wish I grabbed one, ended up getting the PS4 one about a week ago for twice that.

Wow that was kind of blunt. I have no faults to complain with about the PS4 set I picked up. Did you end up getting a bad one before?

Turtle Beach has good quality headsets, but some people don't like them. They're on the cheaper side so they don't offer the maximum quality that other sets give.
Tritton makes some. You can find them here: http://trittonaudio.com/prod/wiiu.asp
They might use digital audio (using S/PDIF), but normally, these will come with all the cables you need. I usually just use Turtle Beach.

Well as good as my hearing is I've never taken more than a 'damn that sounds good' approach to music/video game audio and not gone the whole technophile snob angle needing the best connections and speakers to be happy route. I knew how well rated Turtle Beach stuff was and the quality of their stuff so that's why I went for it. I was at best buy seeing they had a lot to choose from on the floor and took an hour checking each one within a price range I set and it blew the others out of the water. I've never bought a headset for more than I got this one for as I never saw the point so that's why I said it was blunt as there was no reasoning behind it.

yep, the usual broken ear piece, never tossed, thrown or abused.
which is strange because turtle beach used to make some killer sound cards back in the day, now they make headsets that are easily broken and don't sound all that good.
my Plantronics Gamecom 777 are still going, have had them about 5 years now, and still sound better than any turtle beach ones I owned.
sucky thing is that its 2 individual 3.5mm, one headphone other microphone that I can use just as is or use a USB adaptor that goes with it.
it kinda fits my style picking the odd ones that no one would ever think of, peripheral wise I have the Gamecome 777, a Logitech G710+ and a M$ sidewinder mouse on the PC, aside from higher quality 3rd party specialty controllers for consoles (usually Hori) I would just use any ol Bluetooth headset

Thanks for the explanation as I was curious.
I saw a couple of Gamecom headsets at BB when I was there, but they didn't rate as nicely, not as nice as the 777 as I just looked it up but those aren't made anymore. I don't like buying used headsets, people are just dirty and I don't see new ones on ebay as of this moment to see what they'd go for new today versus when they retailed as newegg looks like they had them for $80 back then.
I just know the set of headphones I did grab has the best audio I've heard out of a headset in a very long time. The last ones I think that topped it which were cups over(around?) the ear too were made in the late 70s early 80s and went into this badass pioneer stereo/amplifier deck I had for a very long time and it had one of those 1/2 diameter big metal jacks on those headphones but the audio was super clear, crisp and clean.
