Anyone else have games that they picked up, but never got to playing?
For me recently it's Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen and parasite Eve for psx, and bard's tale on ps2.

I disgusted myself that I sat on a few games for awhile and just ended up selling them to get it out of mind and out of sight. The worst was over 2 years holding into Lufia 2, but having a kid killed any ability to do a time consuming RPG on a TV. I also sat on Pikmin 3 for like 6 months, same with Fire Emblem for 3DS and ended up ditching both as well. Currently the only game that's rotting unused is 3DS Smash Bros which is still sealed and I only bought as I got it for $6, and I have a sealed up copy of Final Fantasy 5 Advance which i'll unseal when I finish or tire of playing FF6A.
I've learned my lesson to buy only if you'll definitely get to it and quick or it gets shelved and dusty.
Speaking of smash bros for 3DS... I want that audio CD, if anyone has the WiiU version and would take $5 or something in paypal gifted for their code I'd appreciate it. I know NZ17 has a post up for that too, get to him first, then me as that wouldn't be right. :)

I have a bunch of games like this. I've been spending more time searching for games than playing them, I figure I might as well keep looking before they completely disappear locally.

Literally half my collection. Perhaps more. Who has time for all these awesome games that require hours of investment? I find myself lately either leaving Civ 5 on (two monitors + windowed mode) or picking up quick and easy Atari and NES games. Anything that requires more attention I can't give.

Oh, a whole bunch. But there are more then a few times I bought games I CAN'T play.
The first time this really happened was when I was a teen in the late 90s and got a copy of Escape from Monkey Island for PC, that my current machine had no way in hell of running. But I was pretty hype of Lucasart Adventures at the time, and had to have it.
Then I pre-ordered Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, so I could get the bonus Ocarina of Time disc, even though it would be SEVERAL years until I got a Gamecube.
More recently I've started to acquire some PSP titles while flea market diving, in particular Mega Man Powered-Up and Castlevania X Chronicles, even though I DO NOT OWN A PSP. Nor am I likely to get one in the near future (why are PSPs, still like 60 bucks?!)

oh man I have been looking for megaman powered up...
Yeah, I just found it laying on a table at the Flea market, the guy said '4 bucks' and I said 'Yes'.
Actually... thinking back... that was the same day and table I found Xenoblade Chronicles for like... 8 bucks. I think I even got it bundled with Powered Up for $10 total.
That was a pretty good day.

lucky, I don't find deals like that often, but when I do its like
"that's a strange little tv with a controller attached to it. $5? meh why not"
oh that wasn't a tv
i'll go so long with out finding any deals they must bulid up and hit with a big item, $5 vectrix, $1 rental VB with hard plastic case, Free complete TG16 in a dumpster with a ton of Apple IIe stuff, Dumpster dreamcasts, $20 complete NES sets
then it goes dry for a long time, the deal gods could drop a top loader some where here for me though!

I am sitting on hundreds of games I have not played for more than 10 or so minutes to test them.
I do intend on playing them and have played a good chunk lately. Pikmin, genesis operation, ssb melee, contra 3, and symphony of the night. I am working on more. But its hard to stick with just one.
Sadly I have to admit that I have a very addictive mindset. And if I do get stuck to a game it's gonna be a long time before I do anything else......Minecraft....it eats my soul.

Harlan Ellison has a great line in one of his stories that touches on this. When a character with a huge library is repeatedly asked "Have you read all these books?" by visitors, he eventually works out the perfect answer:
"Hell no. Who wants a library full of books you've already read?"
Similarly, I'm not too bothered that I have tons of games I have yet to play. Since I don't spend big bucks on my collection, most of what I've gotten has been cheap. I'd far rather have some of these games now, and have the luxury of turning to them when the time is right, than try to reacquire them when prices have gotten even further out of hand.

On the classic console/computer physical side, I have a just a few I haven't played. That will eventually change as I expose my girlfriend's children and my daughter (lotta kids BTW) to the wonders of classic gaming.
On the modern/download side.....I'm a hoader. I would pick up deals on the Humble Bundles or snag a title or two on past major Steam or GOG sales. I probably have a good maybe twenty or so games I've never downloaded and many are titles I wouldn't let the kids play.
Granted I probably payed a pittance for the sheer volume of titles I got but still. I know I'm not going to have the time to play these games in the future.

I find myself lately either leaving Civ 5 on (two monitors + windowed mode) or picking up quick and easy Atari and NES games. Anything that requires more attention I can't give.
That's where I am right now and I kind of do and don't feel bad about it. Since I got this laptop a few weeks ago I've stopped using the PS4 and the 3DS cold and I kind of feel bad about it, but also I don't.
I still have yet to finish Lego Movie Game, Tomb Raider, Last of Us, and barely started LittleBigPlanet 3 on the PS4. And on the 3DS I've not touched SmashBros(may just sell it sealed), Theaterhythm FF Curtain Call, Zelda LBW, Luigi's Mansion and Bravely Default aren't done -- that last one there I probably won't pick back up as I burned out on it but the others I would play.
I've got this nice library of Steam/GoG games I can finally really dig into and it's just infinitely easier on me to do that with the TV often tied up with my three year old and her disney programming on.
Like movies, if starting today I never purchased another game I'm sure I'll be dead and gone prior exhausting my current collection/backlog. That's only counting legitimate physical purchases and not even considering the virtually limitless amount of free-to-play games, demos, homebrew, ROMs, or pirated stuff.
I see people paying $50k for a vehicle and think that's insane due to them never getting $50k worth of use out of it. I look at new games the same way. I see no point in paying $60+ for a new game that will be knocked down to half that price within 6 months. Seeing a game I paid $10 for sitting in the shrinkwrap collecting dust makes me feel like a rube, but not nearly as bad as one that cost 6 times that.

Thankfully, for most of my sealed titles, I have paid nowhere near release price. I have this strange condition that won't let me leave a new game on the shelf in the store if it is on a super clearance. That is how I wound up with Iron Man 2, I think, for the PS2, as well as other crummy titles. Most of the ones that I did pay full price for, I wound up selling later on for a profit. Not that this was the plan, it just worked out that way. It definitely got better once I started only opening games when I was going to start playing them. That way my unused ones were still sealed. That helped me with Xenoblade Chronicles and the first Hyperdimension Neptunia CE. The Xenoblade I had thrown in a drawer when my order from GS came in. A long time later I saw the posts about it going for an obscene amount of money and the thought occurred to me that I might have that game. I went looking around my room, found it, and sold it. You can tell it meant that much to me that I wasn't even sure if I had bought it.

I have way to many unplayed games. I have been thinking about alphabetically going through each console so that way games don't get randomly forgotten. I know recently I popped in Dragon Valor for the first time and I always though it was an epic long RPG. Turns out it's more of a RPGish early hack and slash with a braching story. Never would have guessed and I don't think it's all that long.

When I have money I buy, when I'm broke I litterslly have new games to play. I see nothing wrong with it. Earlier this month I popped in Persona 3: FES for the first time. Bought it when PS2 was still current gen.

Absolutely! I would say I still have at least 150, maybe 200 SNES games I want to play thoroughly before all is said and done. So many games to get to, so little time.
Most of these games I bought back in 2006, and nearly 10 years later, I still haven't played. Pretty unreal, but definitely not uncommon for gamers with our type of background.
On the bright side, I have never felt like any entertainment product I've ever bought has give me so much in return value.

I've kind of got that problem too with some old games going way back, and some I bought I had way back and never finished then or now.
On the NES I have 6, SNES 11, and GBA 7 (24 games in all) FF5 Advance on GBA is still sealed as I still haven't had the time to get fed up with or finish FF6 to jump back to it. All these I own still and have never got around to putting serious time into them, or went a good distance and just kind of forgot about it and never did them for one reason or another. Of those 11 on SNES, two of them are in the mail but I haven't even messed with on a cart in the past, just a ROM so I know they're nice.

A couple years back when gamestop was pretty much giving away PS2 games, I ended up with several dozen and by now I've only played maybe half of them. I don't regret buying them all, though, because they were all ones that were on my want list or games I've heard a lot of positive things about so I'll get to 'em eventually. That's pretty much the only thing though. Other than my PS2 stack, I generally give at least a quick try out to any games I get within a week or so of picking it up.

Last year I made a google drive set of files for myself. One of them is an upcoming list of games I want both MODERN (to be released or out and didn't buy yet) and also a classic list. I use that to cherry pick what I'm after.
The other is the important one to me, the backlog file, the nagging taunting pain in the ass reminder of stuff I let sit around. It has been invaluable for just two reasons. Motivation to play and motivation to realize it ain't happening so it's time to sell it. That file alone has both got me to play things, but also make some money and take the stress off of having crap sit around.

Unless you count briefly testing/trying out a game, which I do with almost everything, hundreds of games. More than I've played to completion I'm sure. Backlogs are frightful things.

Hundreds, but as of yesterday, Power Blade is no longer one of them. Finally gave it a serious attempt, and finished it. I mean I did play it, but never seriously tried to complete it. :)
The game is finally getting the recognition it deserves, wasting no time in spiking exactly like Kickmaster.

Powerblade and Kickmaster finally spiked eh? I quit watching the prices on NES games like a year and a half ago out of disgust unless it was a specific game I was looking for or saw out and about and fired up the wifi to check. I was surprised they didn't as they're post-SNES launch taito games. That seems to be the wallet kiss of death as a licensed NES game buyer. I had both, finished neither, but I think it was more burn out than dislike but I just got bored after playing like half of both, yet I realize they were good games, excellent for the year.

um.. way too many. As far as the collection goes, I acquire them faster then I can play them. But that is to be expected. Notably right now I have Pikmin 3 waiting for me as I am still trying to finish Pikmin 2 first. I am also playing through all of the Pokémon games and I am currently on Black Version. I own all of the games but only ever beat Red, but I never sit down long enough to put any real time into them. Add most of my retro collection to that and you can imagine the guilt I feel for not showing everyone (video games) an equal amount of attention.

I wish to own the 1st Powerblade, but i guess i am screwed now, and damn, Kickmaster goes around 40 to 60 bucks loose now with bids ending on 40 to 50 bucks, oh right, they had to soft rigged the auctions so that the end price NEVER GOES BELOW THE MINIMAL BIN PRICE! TOTALLY NOT SHADY AT ALL,:texaschain:.
For crying out loud, some dwerp was even selling the box and manuals with no game for 100$, AND IT SOLD! i am not even kidding!. :frustrated:

Guess i am the luckiest man in my country for having bought Kickmaster at $4 last year when this fiasco was truly showing and i still don't believe that title just happened to pop out in one local after being sorta kicked out of another local with inaccessible prices (which ironically became better when the asshole who was running it got kicked out).
I am still in the fence if it's worth to still searching for loose NES titles or just switch to a flashcart, since i do own quite a bunch of NES games including unique titles, near 100. and there's so few titles i need to complete my collection.
Back on topic :P, for NES, does it count if you actually played a bit but never got deep into it?, because right out the top of my head on NES:

I think if you're not using a retron5 a flash cart maybe the way to go for a majority of people now for both the NES and SNES. The scamming has hit all time highs and the subhuman trash doing it as you pointed out will even bid up stuff like that and part out every piece and sell them individually on ebay too or elsewhere. I stopped buying back in mid 2013 unless a rare stroke of luck hit where I could get a good pre-gouge era price on the stuff. Because of that only in the last couple of months I've lucked into a few SNES games I grabbed but that's it.
Just fight the abuse, get an everdrive. Eventually the scumbag tactics will cause the entire mess to implode, it always does. Nothing will ever return back to normal but it would recede quite a bit. When it comes down to new people seeing it as too much, and others fed up with it like myself just not buying, you'll just have resellers flipping crap between each other until their margins turn to crap and that'll be the tipping point.

On the more modern front, the oldest game I have is Condemned. Bought in 2007, haven't played it beyond the downloadable demo.
I think the oldest game in my collection that I bought and never played when it was new was Tony Hawk 3 N64. Got that on clearance in 2002, opened it to look at the game, and then put it away.

Fairly positive for me it was Lufia II. Bought it maybe 5 years ago on ebay with the manual for just $25 when the cart was already doing about $50 at the time. I kept wanting to play it, but about that time my wife got pregnant, so that and the kid after made doing console RPGs a hard thing to get to so I gave up on it last year and just sold it. I wish I hadn't at times, but I knew it would get used by someone else at least.

Good for you. I have personal restraint control issues with flash carts so I just don't have them anymore. I'm just happy I got a brand new quality cib of Civilization in the mail today for SNES and thankfully it doesn't cost old 90s retail yet and just before that a good as nice game+manual for Firepower 2000. I've got things to play, and since there are less, I can sink more time into that. I find sometimes with the time I do have less is more since I don't get scattered and use nothing.

I casually collect classic games, so I slowly get in games that I don't devote time to immediately, likewise with modern games, I follow GameFly used sales, and I'll buy cheap games that I think I may want to play in the future, so a backlog accumulates. Fortunately, I never buy a new game that I don't play immediately. Basically, having a thrifty outlook means I buy games when I see a good deal so they're available when I want to play, and I'm not wasting new purchase money on games that stay in shink wrap; for modern games, if you're not going to play it immediately, there's no point buying it until it's at least 50% at retail or can be obtained used for really cheap.

90% of modern drops so fast, unless you need to play day one you are better off waiting. Wanted Diablo for X1, and was able to pick it up new for $20 in November. Havent gotten to it yet, but at least I didn't bite at $70 and let it sit there. Was tempted at $25 for Forza Horizon 2, but I decided to wait for under $20.

I did the same with Diablo III as well and the expansion, but for PC. Walmart before Christmas had this sale for $15/ea instead of $50 on them so I made a quick run out just to grab them during that annoying shopping season and it was way worth not going in right away.
