When it comes to handhelds of this era, I am more of a PSP fan by a longshot (quality over quantity) and it was obviously the more powerful system. One guy tells me "more powerful than N64", while DS is somewhere between PS1 and N64 in terms of power. How true is this, and can you give me an example of DS at its technical zenith? I always thought the 3D games had a horrible draw distance and were painfully jaggy, but games like Mario 64 DS were at least somewhat competent. What are good examples of technically proficient DS games, more so ones that were actually good?

I suppose if you really want to be rough about it the PSP would be kind of comparable betweena Dreamcast and a PS2, closer to PS2 though. The DS that would be about on it saying like a PS1/N64 just without the AA filters the N64 had since it's more sharp/rough like PS1 is. I think your near pinnacle of retail level DS stuff to get a taste would be the matrix engine used in the FF3, FF4 and Nostalgia DS RPG game. The DS isn't a powerhouse really so it wasn't too far off the mark saying it fits well in the PS1/N64 generation performance wise.
