If we're not sticking just to classic games, I also have Space Channel 5: Special Edition, Sega Rally 2006, Ultimate Boardgame Collection, two ESA 3 game collections (Long since separated, but I recall Splashdown and V-Rally 3 as being some of the included software), and two boxsets (Medal of Honor and Devil May Cry).

I have the GTA trilogy and Super Monkey Ball Deluxe, but they're the Xbox versions.

Seeing as I have the KoF Nests Saga on PS2, I had to go Wii on the Orochi Saga due to prices and bugs with the PS2 version. Same reason I went with the Japanese separate releases of KoF 02 and 03, less loading time (mainly after order select and round start), and cheaper prices.

I also have some of the Oretachi Game Center releases, but there's only one game on rach. I have Taito Legends 1 on Xbox. I have Tecmo Classic Arcade on Xbox as well, but I don't think it's on PS2.

It was released in Japan on PS2. A music video intro (http://youtu.be/u-S7EFBNuAo) was also added to that version.

The Oretachi Geasen releases are pretty sweet. While they are only one game per package, the extra bonus content including mini-DVD with commercials and play samples, and the OST disc with remixes, along with the small guide pamphlet really made those fun releases to collect.

Neat! Were there any additional or different games on the Japanese PS2 version?

I do really like the Oretachi games. I know some say they're overpriced for just one game, but like you said, the extras are pretty great, and at the time it was the only legal way to play Haunted Castle on a console.

With the Tecmo collection it's been so long since I paid attention to them that I'm not sure if there are differences besides the intro. I think the game content is the same, but really just guessing at this point.

Among the Oretachi games, I was most psyched for Burger Time, but ultimately that was a rude reminder of how slow the original arcade game played.
Time Pilot is the definitive version for home consoles. I love playing that with the proper screen orientation. Oddly, as with many of these releases, it is possible to scale the graphics so only a small portion of the playfield is visible, that can make for some interesting rounds of Time Pilot.

A couple of the later releases like Thunder Cross, Rabbit Punch, and Trio The Punch have some programming issues. Thunder Cross specifically has sfx and bgm issues, and Trio The Punch has locked-up on me the handfull of times I tried to play through it.

Along with Haunted Castle, I think the Oretachi release of Contra is the only near arcade perfect home version. Playing that with a properly vertical orientated monitor is a real treat.

Yeah, I have Contra, and it's good. I wonder how the port on Konami Arcade Classics 2 on 360 is. Super Contra on Vol.1 is quite good.

Contra and Super Contra are just fine on the 360. Their one flaw, as I recall, is that their high score data isn't ever saved. A trait shared by most, if not all, Digital Eclipse arcade emulations on XBLA back during 2005-2006 or so.

Still haven't figured that one out.

Do they offer the option to display on a vertically oriented monitor?

No, there's no TATE option for these two releases or any other vertically oriented XBLA downloads from the Digital Eclipse studio.

These were mass market downloads, not something aimed squarely at the very small enthusiasts community that appreciates such an option (Even if they may never actually utilize it themselves).

Yeah I didnt think Digital Eclipse ever included tate display options.
That leaves the Jpn PS2 Oretachi Game Center releases as the defiitive console versions of Contra and a number of others.

Personally, I have two tvs next to each other with my console outputs split between the two. One tv is tate, the other yoko, so I can play games with their appropriate screen proportions. It was a nice treat to finally be able to play Contra with the original vertical display.

At least with today's HDTV's, it's not the problem that it once was.

If one can get past the large amount of pillarboxing, they're likely still gaming on a display larger than the original cabinet. And the resolution of a HD display results in far less compromises than playing a classic vertically oriented arcade game in a pillarboxed horizontal orientation on a SD CRT did (like most people would've experienced such classic arcade games at home in the past).
