Is it dead for good, or is there a way to repair/resurrect it?

Is this an official card or 3rd party? You could try cleaning the connections on the card first, maybe that's causing some issues. Usually if a card is really dead, it's either not possible or not worth repairing.

You could also try something like free mcboot to reformat the card and see if that fixes it, that worked for me on a card I had with a weird save file I couldn't delete. It works fine now.

You could take it to a church and pay a priest, or use a Phoenix Down.
