Are there hardcore philips cd-i collectors here on digitpress ?
My brother just posted his collection video on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2kGL5pOLf8
I was suprised to hear that there are quite a few Dutch exclusive cd-i games.
Would love to see more love:lovin: for the system.

I dabble a bit. There are a lot of Euro exclusives because Phillips is a Dutch company. I'm not absolutely in love with it, but I do have a few games I truly like on it, and continue to explore what's out there. Well, that, and I buy my wife crappy Stickybear games because they remind her of her childhood.

I have one. I buy games for it here and there when I find them cheap on Ebay or elsewhere.

I am, there's a bunch of junk out there but there's some really fun games too.

I collect for it, too. It's one of the few systems that's mostly stayed under the radar as far as prices go. Only the Nintendo-derived titles seem to attract much interest and I've got them out of the way.

I don't own a CD-i, but if I did I wouldn't be collecting for it, I don't collect any video games. I own games to play. If I had a CD-i I'd be in it to play.
I wouldn't mind giving Wand of Gamelon and The Faces of Evil a try, they seem like decent games. CD-i is basically a passing interest for me though. If I tripped over a CD-i then yeah I'd give it a try. No I wouldn't go out of my way to obtain one just to play a few games, just to say I played the CD-i.

I owned one back in the 90s and had a nice supply of games for it.
Believe it or not, comically horrible and modern panned crap cartoonage from the games aside, both Link Faces of Evil and Zelda Wand of Gamelon are both fairly good games with a nice challenge to them both. You have to really appreciate Zelda II to tolerate or enjoy them. If I could find a cheap CDI again I'd re-acquire Faces of Evil as I finished that. The other Nintendo bastard child Hotel Mario is actually very good, a nice mix of Elevator Action and Mario Bros arcade games with Super Mario World style graphics.
I know at the least I owned those two but also: Mutant Rampage Bodyslam (good final fight type game), Escape from Cyber City(it's like Dragon's Lair but much harder), Dragon's Lair, Space Ace, Voyeur, Lords of the Rising Sun (personal favorite), Tetris, Little Divil(PC ver is on GoG.com), Burn Cycle, Chaos Control(Great 3D rail shooter), and the 7th Guest. I think I probably had a couple more but those come to mind when I went looking for a list of US releases.
My problem though with the system was the fact it was badly designed or poorly coded for because a lot of stuff seemed to have load times, some that stalled the game for moments, and always seemingly between any sequences (especially FMV or FMV overlay of some visuals) which just sucked. I'm thinking since it was a media player and not a game system they didn't dedicate much memory to store information on the fly. That aside if you had that nice gravis pad clone for it the thing was good to play on, and it made for a very nice CD music player too back then.

Hotel mario is really not that bad. I agree with that.
Pac-panic that is shown in the video is also a great cdi game.
I still remember the infomercial that usually ran late night back in the 90's
I bought one about 10 years ago and all the games that received decent reviews.
I have played it some but it mostly sits unused.

I have a Cdi and I'm sorry Tanooki, the Zelda games are not good. Enemies literally spawn on screen for some ridiculously cheap player deaths. Way too hard to be enjoyable.

I really like the Wand of Gamelon and Faces of Evil. They're tough for a few minutes until you get your improved sword, but then they get a lot easier, and while it's easy to die, the only penalty is returning to the beginning of the current area or the map screen if it's your last life, so I didn't think they were too rough. They've got their issues, but they really remind me a ton of the old Valiant Comics Zelda issues I had as a kid and the Zelda cartoon from the Super Mario Bros. Super Show in tone. I wouldn't say they're for everyone, but for a certain type of player they're a great time. Even more fun if your CD-i has a working backup battery (stupid design...)

I've only owned Faces of Evil and I liked it enough. Not as much as the stuff Nintendo did, but I never thought they were bad or deserved the abuse. As he said, they're pretty lenient on death and the game over type death too as you're not really set far back at all as the areas aren't all that large. It's harder to start but once you get a nicer weapon you're fine.

I bought Faces and Wand wanting to like them. I thought the hate behind them surely had to be blown out of proportion. I'm glad you guys discovered something to love but I sure didn't.
That said I actually thought Zelda's Adventure was the most playable of the three, too bad it's plagued by horrible and constant loading times. Seriosuly would it have killed the developer to make each map section larger than your tv screen?

Depending how badly they made the game it might have been all they could have shoved into memory because if I remember right all the movable visuals were like FMV renders or something of the sort laid over high quality flat images which was kind of normal for the era of early CD FMV-ish type gaming stuff. I always thought that game would have been good in the day but never found it, yet years later I never see a nice thing said about it because of what you said, bad controls(lag or something?), missing music at times that cuts out around sound effects, and some other gripes.

I didn't care much for Zelda's Adventure. The other two reminded me a lot of the peripheral Zelda media at the time, and as such still felt like Zelda to me. Zelda's Adventure's digitized look took me away from what was Zelda to me, and the other stuff like the music and scrolling were just icing on the cake. Then again, what was "Zelda to me" was clearly incorrect, as I've truly disliked everything from Ocarina of Time and on. I reserved it, wore the T-shirt, got into the hype, and found it to be dull and repetitive compared to the faster paced original three. Then again, Zelda II is my favorite, so what do I know (other than what I enjoy)...

Gee I wonder why? :) And where is Philips based from? :D Seriously though it does have its good share of quality games when you look at it from the moment it came out, not looking back, then much of it struggles.

Some of you guys might enjoy this ! There is almost no information about Dutch exclusive cdi games on the internet.
https://youtu.be/VejiaKnV1Gc
This video shows 4 people having fun with the philips cd-i !
They are playing the Rare Dutch exclusive game called sport freaks.
This game is based on a Dutch TV show. ( the video has some English subtitles) Sport quiz questions. (Very Hard)
Sport questions are being asked after 3 slots rol.
the first slot shows the sport. The second one shows the year and the last one the country.
Based on these 3 slots you will get a corresponding question

I have a CDi 450 and a few burned games. If I could actually find a controller besides the weird spoon one I have, I'd be much more into it. I actually got around to fixing the timekeeper chip a few days ago.

The 450 has that horrible proprietary power supply as well. I've got 3 units but only 1 working power supply between them all.

I bought a CD-I and a bunch of games years ago, and picked up a number of games since then. Never touched them. I kept hoping to buy a controller other than the bundled remote control. The controllers are now outside what I would like to pay. I thought that I once saw someone selling adapters allowing you to attach a Genesis controller to the CD-I but have not been able to locate such a thing lately.
I should spend a week playing around with the games I have....then I'll get my Nuon DVD player out...
